أحوجُ ما كنتُ إلى عَقلي

أحوجُ ما كنتُ إلى عَقلي

سلبتَهُ بِالكأسِ والرَّطلِ

سلبتَهُ بِالكأسِ والرَّطلِ

When I most needed my reason,

When most my mind I needed

you robbed me of it with the cup and the ratl measure.

You took it with cup and flask

أعطاني الدَّهرُ المُنى كلَّها

أعطاني الدَّهرُ المُنى كلَّها

فَما له يأخذُني كلِّي

فَما له يأخذُني كلِّي

Time granted me all my wishes;

Though fate gave me all I wished

so why does it take all of me?

It takes me, all of me

والعَدلُ أَولى بأميرِ العُلى

والعَدلُ أَولى بأميرِ العُلى

فليَعدِلِ الكأسَ على العَدلِ

فليَعدِلِ الكأسَ على العَدلِ

And justice best befits the prince of lofty glory;

Justice becomes the noble's ways

so let him balance the cup according to justice.
