كلَّماwhenever حثَّdrank eagerly فيamong نَداماهُhis drinking companions رَطلاًa ratl (a measure)
كلَّما حثَّ في نَداماهُ رَطلاً
قالَhe said مَنwhoever ودَّwanted رَطلناour ratl نسقِيهwe give him drink
قالَ مَن ودَّ رَطلنا نسقِيه
Whenever he passed a ratl of wine round among his fellow drinkers,
Whenever he downed a ratl of wine among his drinking companions,
he said, “Whoever desires our ratl, we shall give him drink.”
He said, “Whoever wants our ratl, we will pour it for him.”
وأتاناand he came to us براسَنٍwith elecampane يُشبهُresembles الرَّأthe head (first part)
وأتانا براسَنٍ يُشبهُ الرَّأ
سَ(completes 'head') إذاwhen ما(emphatic particle) بَداappears الشَّيبُgray hair فيهin it
سَ إذا ما بَدا الشَّيبُ فيه
And he came to us with elecampane, resembling the hea—
And he brought us elecampane resembling a head
—d when gray hair begins to show upon it.
