هل عَلمَ النَّدمانُ لما سُقوا
ماwhat أكسبَimparted to الصَّهباءَthe tawny wine ساقِيهاits cupbearer
ما أكسبَ الصَّهباءَ ساقِيها
Did the drinking companions know, when they were served,
what its cupbearer had imparted to the tawny wine?
بدَّلَهاhe transformed it منfrom نَشرِهhis fragrance فَسوةًa fart
بدَّلَها من نَشرِه فَسوةً
وصارَand became ماwhat فيin عِرضِهِhis person; his honor فِيهاin it
وصارَ ما في عِرضِهِ فِيها
He turned it into a fart with his own fragrance,
and what lay in his own person now lay in it.
