    إنِّي إذاً لَشديدُ المكرِ والحِيَلِ

    I have escaped the wiles of wide eyes;

then surely I am formidable in cunning and stratagems,

so long as I depose the sovereign of love for them,

as though that sovereign held his power from me.

I used to be rebuked for my distress; now, for

my patience I am blamed, so I am never free of reproach.

Whether I find solace or do not—alas, my grief!

O men, come to my aid in this grave calamity!

Seize time in moments by which you outrun

time's reversals, and hasten to them without delay.

For proverbs have changed and been overturned,

and the man who takes his time has become the one who errs.

And rise for clear wine in a fair woman's palm,

like the sun when the sun is in Aries.

When you take the cup from her, drawing aside,

she then serves you a cup of amorous talk.

And many a reversal of fortune has visited me by night,

hiding from my reproaches, in dread,

until, when its hands were caught, I shouted at it:

"Here is Ali, and here is Ghurra ibn Ali!"

Then it darted wildly over the earth, hoping to escape them both,

and often spent the night pursued, yet hopeful.

And where can it turn, when every region has been seized

by generosity and glory, in word and deed?

When glory withholds itself from anyone who seeks it,

and the paths to it are cut off before him,

Ali stands lofty above its shoulders,

and remains so, as he always has.

His enemies charge on racing horses,

and these bear lives toward their appointed end.

God bless you—a keen sword whose mark

in calamities bears me witness whenever I speak.

He sees battle, standing forth in the robes of death,

as he sees a beautiful maiden in fine robes.

What charms you in her, when you give her as dowry

your shining deeds amid shining blades and spears?

When you ride out on a venture, you mount for it

a resolve free of delay and faintheartedness.

You have been so lavish in generosity that you now create, among

men of noble deeds, men of baseness and miserliness.
