أبلغinform عبيدَUbayd اللَهِAllah عنِّيon my behalf وقلand say
أبلغ عبيدَ اللَهِ عنِّي وقل
ياO ذاpossessor of العَطاياgifts أصبَحَتhave become تَترىsuccessive
يا ذا العَطايا أصبَحَت تَترى
Convey my message to Ubayd Allah, and say:
Convey to the servants of Allah my regards, and say:
O you whose gifts now come one after another,
O bestower of favors, they have become scarce
حتىuntil مَتىwhen تبنيyou build وتَعلوand rise أماdo you not
حتى مَتى تبني وتَعلو أما
تَشعرُare aware منfrom تَحتِكbeneath you بالشِّعرىof Sirius
تَشعرُ من تَحتِك بالشِّعرى
How long will you build and rise? Do you not
How long will you build and rise high while
notice Sirius beneath you?
Beneath you lies one suffering from poverty
إنيindeed I وإنand although أسلَفتَنيyou previously granted me منَّةًa favor
إني وإن أسلَفتَني منَّةً
لَفيindeed in انتِظارِexpectation of المنَّةِthe favor الأُخرىthe other
لَفي انتِظارِ المنَّةِ الأُخرى
I, though you have already granted me a favor,
Even if you have lent me a favor previously
am indeed awaiting the next favor.
I await another favor
فابعَثso send إلىto سالِفةٍan earlier one أختَهاits sister
فابعَث إلى سالِفةٍ أختَها
ولتَكنِand let it be الآنفةُthe new one الكُبرىthe greater
ولتَكنِ الآنفةُ الكُبرى
So send the earlier favor a sister,
So send forth one whose sister was the former
and let the new one be the greater.
And let the latter be greater
