    Complaining of them—and how many

a complainant is himself more unjust!

I freely bestow, whenever I speak of

them in praise, what I do not know,

going to extremes in the falsehood of

my words—and would that the falsehood were understood!

So it is as though they were molded with

the same character, O Ibn Yaghnam.

    And you escaped, standing alone,

on your own, neither blamed nor censured.

So stay safe, for I have marveled

that you should be forsaken on that account.
