Everyone who asks me to desist incites me.

And whoever helps passion against me is helping me.

They came, and on their side reproach

stood, while ardent love was on mine.

Then they left: what I have does not delight the

company, nor does what they brought console me.

And one delicate in speech, cheek, and

dress, and frail in his vows of love and faith—

my ruses began to draw him along

    willingly—how fiercely he defies me!

And we met—has my story reached you,

of when I brought him before the Macedonian wine for judgment?

So it ruled in my favor against him: my left hand

pillowed him, and my right hand turned him over.

Then I began to thank the cup and the

giver, though thanking him taxes my strength.

How can I praise in words, for a moment of

time, one who gives generously at every moment?

And for that praise, one kind of gift can match

it, leaving the other kinds he bestows on me unrequited.

Whatever I wished for became mine rather than

yours, after having been yours rather than mine.

Yet whenever I take possession of it,

it grieves me that gratitude for it takes possession of me.

Muhammad ibn Ali has relieved me of

every care but thanking him—who will relieve me of that?

All people proved unequal to it, until

the one asked for help joined the one seeking help.

Choice virtues from the Banu Humayd

appear, polished bright, before the eyes,

clad in noble deeds in which come

    true even expectations deemed false.
