ياO صاحبَpossessor of القَدرَةpower ماذاwhat تَرىdo you think
يا صاحبَ القَدرَة ماذا تَرى
فيof صاحبٍa companion صاحبِpossessing وجهَينِtwo faces
في صاحبٍ صاحبِ وجهَينِ
O man of power, what do you think
O capable one, what do you see
of a companion with two faces?
In a two-faced companion
تسمعُhears منهfrom him أُذُنيmy ear ضِدَّthe opposite of ماwhat
تسمعُ منه أُذُني ضِدَّ ما
تَراهُsees it منin أفعالِهhis deeds عَينيmy eye
تَراهُ من أفعالِه عَيني
My ear hears from him the opposite of what
My ears hear the opposite of
my eye sees in his deeds.
What my eyes see in his actions
أخٌa brother وياand oh رُبَّmany a أخٍbrother جُرحُهُhis wound
أخٌ ويا رُبَّ أخٍ جُرحُهُ
لمdid not يُغنِbring relief فيهfor it دَمُblood (here, dragon's-blood resin) الأخوَينِthe two brothers
لم يُغنِ فيه دَمُ الأخوَينِ
A brother—and oh, how many a brother whose wound
A brother whose wound, oh Lord
the 'blood of the two brothers' could not heal!
Was not healed by the blood of two brothers
