هِمَّتُهhis ambition ضرَّةُa rival wife أَحوالِهِhis circumstances
What do you see, O Ibn Bishr, for one
whose ambition is a rival wife to his circumstances?
تَعلوrises بِهwith him طَوراًat times وكَمand how many مِنof فَتىًa young man
عُلوُّهُhis rise أَكبَرُthe greatest إِعلالِهِhis affliction
At times it raises him high; and how many a young man
has his rise as his greatest affliction!
الناسُpeople صِنفانِtwo kinds فمُستَرفِدٌso one seeking aid
مالاًmoney وَلاقيكَand one meeting you بأَفضالِهِwith his bounty
People are of two kinds: one asking for
money, and one meeting you with his bounty.
فَواحِدٌso one يُنفِقُspends مِنfrom وَجهِهِhis face (dignity)
وآخَرand another يُنفِقُspends مِنfrom مالِهِhis wealth
So one spends from his face—his dignity—
and another spends from his wealth.
