وإِلى كَم أسير في الأَرضِ كَي

وإِلى كَم أسير في الأَرضِ كَي

ألقى فُلاناً وأستَمِيح فُلانا

ألقى فُلاناً وأستَمِيح فُلانا

And how long shall I travel the earth to

How far shall I wander the earth to find

Meet so-and-so and ask so-and-so for gifts?

So-and-so to meet and make amends with so-and-so

تحتَ سُوقٍ من الكَسادِ

تحتَ سُوقٍ من الكَسادِ

يُباعُ الشِّعرُ فيه مُستَرخِصاً مجانا

يُباعُ الشِّعرُ فيه مُستَرخِصاً مجانا

Beneath a market of stagnation,

Under markets struck with recession

Poetry is sold there, held cheap, for nothing.

Poetry is sold there complimentary

لا أرَى مَن يَسومُ ذلكَ منِّي

لا أرَى مَن يَسومُ ذلكَ منِّي

حيثُ ما كنتُ أو أرَى النُّعمانا

حيثُ ما كنتُ أو أرَى النُّعمانا

I see no one who offers me a price for it,

I see none who would reproach me for that

Wherever I am, unless I see al-Nuʿman.

Wherever I was or saw wellbeing

فهوَ ذُو راحةٍ تُقيمُ عَلى ما

فهوَ ذُو راحةٍ تُقيمُ عَلى ما

قلتُ فيه مِن جُودِها بُرهانا

قلتُ فيه مِن جُودِها بُرهانا

For he has a palm that provides, in support of what

It has comforts built on what

I have said of him, proof through its generosity.

I said of its generosity as evidence
