He sent estrangement, with reproach leading it.

So why should I accept it when I do not want it?

    فاليومَ حُجابُ الملوكِ صُدودُها

    He made a custom of veiling eyes by his aversion;

So today, kings' chamberlains are their rebuffs.

The eyes withdrew from him to the water of weeping,

As though their departure were their arrival at water (reading uncertain).

Then some of the tales became apparent to him,

Which, but for tears, he would inwardly deny.

He came to wipe away my tears with promises,

Deceitfully; I recall his pledge and shed still more.

Had he given generously where his generosity was fitting,

I would not have sought them where their bounty is unlocked.

Have you seen what calamities have brought upon me,

Coming in succession, singly and in hosts?

They found their greatest opportunity among the generous,

Yesterday, when it was said their number had dwindled.

Then the turns of time brought them, driving them on,

And their Sa'id hastened forward, leading noble deeds.

The two met, and the age's greatest anguish

Was dispelled; time could not bring it back.

    فرأيتُ ألويةً تُحلُّ عُقودُها

    He fastened the banner of bounty, and I followed him;

Then I saw banners whose knots were being undone.

So victory stays devoted to the man whose byname bears it,

Until their destroyer annihilates noble deeds.

And now a state stands revealed, enfeebled

By sickness; visit it as often as you can.

I fear that time, if you neglect it,

Will fetter it with calamities of the past.

So ask the far-traveling rhymes: did they not

Travel in my name, their song requested again?

And though I have been brief and have not prolonged it, indeed,

Long will its immortality endure in the house of praise.
