أَرأَيتَHave you seen ماwhat سَبَقَتreached first إِلَيهِto it مَخائِليmy presentiments
فيin حُبِّlove of هَذاthis الخائِفِfearful one المُتَحامِلِoverbearing one
Have you seen what my presentiments foresaw
I saw what my thoughts had attained
in love for this fearful, overbearing one?
In loving this fearful complaining one
ماnot كُنتُI was أَدريI knew ماwhat يَكونُwould happen وإنَّماbut rather
غَلَبَprevailed الدَّلالُcoquetry فَصارَand so became بَعضَpart of دَلائِليmy evidence
I did not know what would happen; rather,
I did not know what would happen, but
coquetry prevailed and became part of my evidence.
Infatuation prevailed, so it became one of my signs
ويريبُنيand it troubles me أنَّthat الوُلاةَthose in authority تَسرَّعواhave rushed
مَعin favor of كُلِّevery مُعتَدِلٍwell-proportioned one بِحُكمٍwith a verdict مائِلِcrooked
And it troubles me that those in authority have rushed
And it worries me that the governors were quick
to favor every well-proportioned one with a crooked verdict.
To side with every moderate with an unfair rule
يَبدوhe appears فتُلزِمُهمand so compel them مَحاسِنُthe beauties of وجهِهِhis face
أَنto يُلزِمواcharge المَقتولَthe slain ذَنبَthe guilt of القاتِلِthe killer
He appears, and the beauties of his face compel them
His beautiful face appears so they have to
to lay the killer's guilt upon the slain.
Blame the victim for the killer’s crime
فَإِذاso when قَضَىdies رَجُلٌa man يُقالُit is said مَضىcarried away بِهhim
أَجَلٌan appointed end نَعمyes أَجَلٌan appointed end ولَيسَand not بآجِلِdeferred
So when a man dies, they say he was carried off by
So if a man passes away, they say he died
an appointed end—yes, an end, and not a deferred one.
Of fate, yes fate, not of injustice
أنتَyou ابتَدأتَbegan وماand did not صَبرتَendure ولَمand not يكُنhave been
ليَهيجَto stir قَوليmy speech أَوor تَهيجَstir بَلابِليmy heartaches
You began and did not endure; nor would
You started it and did not have patience and there was
my words have been roused, or my heartaches stirred.
No provocation from me or from my confused state
سَأَقومُI shall rise مُنتَصِراًavenging myself وأبلغُand prevail قائِلاًas a speaker
إِنif كانَis يَبلغُprevailing قائِلٌa speaker مِنagainst فاعِلِa doer
I shall rise to avenge myself and prevail through speech,
I will stand victorious and speak out
if a man of words can prevail against a man of deeds.
If words can reach from a speaker to a doer
ياO ساكِنَdweller at الطَّرفِthe frontier احتَفِظkeep safe مِنsome of طَرفِهhis gaze
إِنif كُنتَyou are تَرغَبُdesiring فيfor سِلاحٍa weapon كامِلِperfect
O frontier-dweller, secure some of his gaze,
O resident of the gaze, beware of his gaze
if you desire a perfect weapon.
If you wish for fully armed protection
دَعleave ثَغرَهُhis mouth فيat الثَّغرِthe frontier قُوتاًas sustenance واعطِنيand give me

Leave his mouth at the frontier as sustenance, and give me
Leave his mouth as strength in the mouth and give me
the resident's fare there and the traveler's provisions.
Sustenance to stay with and provision to travel
ولربَّand many خمرٍveils داؤهنَّtheir malady مخامِرٌlurking within
وغَلائِلٍand shifts مَحشُوَّةstuffed بغَوائِلِwith deadly perils
And many veils whose malady lurks within,
By some wines their harm is the drinkers
and shifts stuffed with deadly perils,
And twisting hidden by twisters
يَنظُرنَthey look وَخزاًstabbing فيinto القُلوبِhearts وَتارَةًand at times

cast glances that stab hearts, and at times
They look with frowns in the hearts and sometimes
wink behind the departing man who feigns indifference,
Winks behind the back of the unsuspecting passerby

with black spearheads that have no shafts,
With black tongues without interventions
mounted in whites, without baldrics.
Placed in innocent whites without burdens
ضَربٌa kind مِنof الحدثانِmisfortune حَدَّثَtold نفسَهitself
منِّيabout me غَداةَon the morning لَقيتُهI met it بِالباطِلِfalsely
A stroke of misfortune told itself
A young man talked to himself about me
falsehoods about me on the morning I encountered it.
When I met him the next day with falsehood
فيماwhile يُقاتِلُit fought إِذwhen بَداappeared عَلَمthe banner of الهُدىguidance
وعَليand Ali بنson of محمَّدِMuhammad بنson of مُقاتِلِMuqatil
As it fought, there appeared the banner of guidance
As he fights, the flag of truth appeared
and Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Muqatil.
And Ali son of Mohammed son of the fighter
تَجريflow المَواهِبُgifts كالمَواكِبِlike processions حَولَهُaround him
بِوَسائِلthrough entreaties مِنَّاfrom us وغَيرِand without وَسائِلِentreaties
Gifts flow around him like processions,
Gifts flow around him like processions
through entreaties from us, and without entreaties.
With means from us and other means
فَرَأَيتُهُthen I saw it منfrom بَعدafter ماwhen حفَّتgathered بِهaround it
خَيلُthe cavalry of المَطامِعِhopes عادَturned back كالمُتَثاقِلِlike one weighed down
Then I saw it, after it had been surrounded by
I saw him after the horses of greed surrounded him
the cavalry of hopes, turn back as though weighed down.
He returned as heavily burdened
وكَذاand thus الندىgenerosity عِندَin the face of النَّوائِبِcalamities كالرَّدىlike death
سيماespecially إذاwhen أَمسَىcomes to be جوارَbeside السائِلِthe supplicant
And thus generosity is like death to calamities,
And so help in adversities is like harm
especially when it dwells beside the supplicant.
Especially if it stays with the questioner
وسَماءِand a heaven of مَجدٍglory كالسَّماءِlike the sky نُجومُهاits stars
كنُجومِهاlike its stars بَلrather هُنَّthey غَيرُnot أَوافِلِsetting
And a heaven of glory, like the sky, whose stars
And a sky of glory, its stars
are like its stars—rather, they never set.
Are like its stars, rather they do not set
جَعلَhe made المَكارِمَnoble deeds كالمَعارِجِlike ladders وارتَقَىand ascended

He made noble deeds like ladders, and climbed
He made virtues like ladder steps and climbed
upon them until he reached it through bounty.
Them until he reached the climber
هِمَمٌlofty ambitions تَضرُّharm بِأَهلِهاtheir bearers فَكَأَنَّهاso it is as though they
طالَتgrew tall ليَأخُذَto call to account أَهلَهاtheir bearers بِطَوائِلِfor old scores
Ambitions that harm their bearers, as though they
Ambitions that harm their owners, as if
grew tall so their bearers might be made to pay for old scores.
They are long so as to afflict them with difficulties
مِنfrom مَعشَرٍa people كَرمُواwere noble فَقَلَّso became few عَديدُهُمtheir number
ومآثِرُand glorious deeds of الكُرَماءِthe noble غَيرُnot قَلائِلِfew
From a people so noble that their number is small,
Of a generous group, their number is few
yet the glorious deeds of the noble are not few.
And the good deeds of the generous are not few
كلٌّeach لَهُfor him حِجرُthe lap of الرِّئاسَةِleadership مَولِدٌa birthplace
بِمراضعٍwith wet nurses مِنfrom سِلكِهاits ranks وقَوابِلِand midwives
For each, the lap of leadership is a birthplace,
Each has the stone of leadership as a birthplace
with wet nurses of its own ranks, and midwives.
With wet nurses from its race and midwives
فإِذاso when نَشاhe grows up فيهاin it وأَنشَأand establishes سُنَّةًa custom
فيamong النَّاسِthe people كانَhe is عَلىon سَبيلٍa road سابِلِwell-trodden
So when he grows up there and establishes a custom
So if he grows up in it and starts a custom
among the people, he follows a well-trodden road.
Among the people, he will be on a flooding course
وكأنَّماand as though آباؤُهُمtheir fathers أَبناؤُهُمtheir sons
خَلَطَmingled الثَّناءُpraise أَواخِراًlater generations بِأَوائِلِwith earlier ones
And it is as though their fathers were their sons;
It is as if their fathers are their sons
praise has mingled the later generations with the earlier.
Praise confused the late with the early
فَلئِنso if indeed طَلعتَyou have risen فَماthen not أَنيتَdid (uncertain reading) غَريبَةًa strange deed
فَيُقالَthat it should be said كَيفَhow طُلوعُthe rising of هَذاthis النازِلِthe lowly one
So if you have risen, you have done nothing strange,
If you rise, you will not be a stranger
that one should say, 'How has this lowly one risen?'
And it will be said, how is the rising of this newcomer
خاصَمتُI disputed فيكَabout you المالَwealth حتَّىuntil إِنَّهindeed it
قَدindeed صارَhas come to يَهجرُنيshun me وكانَand it had been مُواصِليmy companion
I disputed with wealth about you, until it
I disputed with money until it
has come to shun me, though it once kept me company,
Started to abandon me though it kept me company
مِنfor أَجلِthe reason أَنِّيthat I قُلتُsaid إِنَّكَthat you are عادِلٌjust
فيماin what قَضَيتَyou decreed وقالَand it said ليسَhe is not بِعادِلِjust
because I said that you are just
Because I said you are fair
in what you decreed; and it said, 'He is not just.'
In what you decided and it said it is not fair
