Let your punishment of me accord with my endurance,

not through separation, for my hand is too weak against it.

The threat was foolish and frightened me; she spoke thus:

"Threatening is folly where the threatener holds sway."

Say to the ruins whose landmarks separation erased

with the east wind's hand, as though they had never been known:

Within your shelter, my heart and eye were brought to tears

by one who used to dwell in the black core of each.

And a guileless girl, beguiled by her own beauty,

thinks that the end is like the beginning.

And if today Time, for her sake, assaults

the people of love, tomorrow it will assault her.

She stayed awake to make my sleeplessness a barrier

to her phantom; your messenger has arrived—so sleep.

And she began disavowing love to me, after

acknowledging it for a time; I said, "Take it upon yourself."

There is no mutual fairness in love except that

between lofty glory and Ali ibn Muhammad.

No separation parts them, nor any eastbound envoy

with a message save generosity and nobility.

A judge—the days are seen to judge in his favor,

ever going forth with what he loves at dusk and dawn.

He meets you with pleasing manners, accompanied by

    splendid generosity, approachable and dewy-faced.

So pardon your envier, Abu Hasan; these are

indeed virtues that give the envious an excuse.

    ولأتبعنَّ الظنَّ فيك فأهتَدي

    Seekers of bounty who followed their expectations went astray;

yet I shall surely follow my expectation of you and find my way.

When I saw your lofty ambition, I said, "A man of

glory"; seeing your character, I said, "Here is a seeker of bounty."

You, then, are worthier to be the exemplar,

ever, for the excellence of your deeds—not the imitator.

And I see wonders from Eid al-Adha and from you:

each I see bringing a feast-day to the celebrant.

Tell me, then: which of you should be congratulated? Guide me,

for I have strayed from the soundest path.
