الحالُthe state of affairs مُظلمةٌdark وليسَand not يُنيرُهاilluminates it
الحالُ مُظلمةٌ وليسَ يُنيرُها
إلاexcept مُنيرُilluminator (Munir) الدَّولةِof the state (al-Dawla) الغرَّاءِthe resplendent
إلا مُنيرُ الدَّولةِ الغرَّاءِ
The state of affairs is dark, and none illuminates it
except Munir al-Dawla, light of the resplendent state.
والناسُand the people كالمتعَجِّبِينَlike those astonished لهائِمٍat a wanderer
والناسُ كالمتعَجِّبِينَ لهائِمٍ
ظَمآنthirsty وَهوwhile he is علىat شَفيرِthe edge of الماءِthe water
ظَمآن وَهو على شَفيرِ الماءِ
And the people are like those astonished at a wanderer,
thirsty, though he is at the water’s edge.
