فكَمso how often يَرضَىhe is pleased ويُسخِطُهand angers him رِضاهُhis pleasure
Has not love of him enslaved me at his own whim?
How often he is pleased, yet his own pleasure angers him!
لئِنeven if أخَذَتresorted جَوارِحُهُhis limbs بجَورٍto injustice
فَماyet did not أخذَتresort بجَورٍto injustice مُقلَتاهُhis two eyes
Even if his limbs have resorted to cruelty,
yet his two eyes have not resorted to cruelty.
وإنand even if لمdid not يُبدِreveal غيرُهُماanything besides them both غَراماًpassion
فإنَّهماfor indeed they both اللَّتانِthe two that استَدعَتاهُboth called it forth
And though nothing besides them has revealed passion,
for they are the very two that called it forth.
كَذاthus الأَعضاءُthe limbs ليسَdoes not يَبوحُdivulge مِنهاamong them

بسِرِّabout the secret of الحُبِّlove إلاexcept مَنthe one who جَناهُengendered it
So it is with the limbs: none among them divulges
love's secret except the one that engendered it.
O you who bid me بصَبرٍto be patient إنَّindeed صَبراًpatience

O you who bid me be patient, surely the patience
you prescribed replaces what it forbade.

I see you have set a finite counterpart
for a longing whose limit is unknown.

Leave me with those who have borne my heart away,
if you are capable of nothing else.

They grew proud and kept aloof, played coy and grew weary;
they were invited and held back, gained mastery and grew haughty.

And a beauty, in every heart,
holds sway despite her ill treatment of it:

when her faults vary, they are erased
by her charms, which resemble one another,

like the virtues of Ibn Ibrahim, when
his bounty's dew watered their garden's blossoms.

He reproached and nearly begged to be excused when
the one who sought his bounty saw his hands' largesse

and, hoping in him, came to grasp from him
something his hopes had never encompassed.

O Abu Nasr, young champion of glory, whose station no one
may occupy except its own young champion.

He addresses me with a graciousness with which no
brother among mankind addresses his brother;

and with speech like sweet water that quenches
the thirsty as soon as the thirsty beholds it.

And the splendid gift makes you blush;
the envious see it, while we do not.
