I am not content with my tears for their secret,

without giving my tongue over to denunciation.

Sorrows—all of them mine; and if I were

able, I would lament them with my whole being.

And weary toil is my attempt to ward off, by complaining

of them, what cannot be warded off from me.

And in leaving them, I hope that separation

will bring patience—but where is the patience of the distraught?

    Seeking guidance toward solace—but

the antidote and the one stung were kept apart.

Then, when I found that in your nearness

to me, you drew away, O Ibn Wakiʿ.

You came, O master of ingenious speech,

with an ingenious act of turning away.

And you held aloof when I courted your

affection; be gentle with the rejected suitor.

A kinship binds us, yet you are the one

who dwells in its every lofty house.

Mine is the seeking; you know what it

entitles me to—you are not deceived.

And yours is the station that claims its due

of my deference, whenever a station is exalted.

Yet I would like your character to be natural,

    gentle, like your unforced verse.

So that in your affectionate greeting I may see in you

what I see in the ode and the short poem.

For even if I am in autumn, I am

in spring through the meanings of his verse.
