Guides to passions—following them leads astray,

and their coming together unites the workings of hearts:

eyelids bearing magic that lips could dispel

with counter-charms against them—were those lips not withheld.

And a fire of youth, kindled by ignorance, began

to shine, its radiance taking the form of gray hair.

It confronts me in my sideburns and my locks,

to restrain a soul that will not be restrained by it.

So do not forsake me: love has a span

that ends with death, not before then.

And a resolute one, with a keen blade between his eyelids, triumphant

over every land, or else obeyed by its ruler.

    فَهَل كانَ مَحظوراً عَلَيهِ استِماعُها

    He rises and recites pages every day;

was he, then, forbidden to listen to them?

so from his station they loom and come into view.

Here I am, then, with calamities at one station,

and yonder, at another station, stand glory and its beasts of prey.

And after firsthand sight of every calamity

I have complained of today, nothing remains but to repel it.

And people have enthroned misfortunes and pledged

allegiance to them; your hands' bounty must dethrone them.

Your nights are white like beautiful women; should one find

blackness in one of them, it is her veil.

And I swear, if I confused a day with a night

for anyone, separating out the night would baffle him.

And since there came among the days a day recorded in history,

for which congratulations are offered in an assembly, their reach has grown.

So if the bygone days that have passed were able,

out of longing, their messengers and letters would come.

And were the days still to come not awaiting the one who steers them

to you, the swiftest among them would take the lead.

As for my tales, the most astonishing things seen

and heard by you are those kept secret and those made public.

    فلم تَنكَسِر واليومَ أدى ارتِفاعُها

    I took on the ledger of debts for what had passed;

so no shortfall arose, and today their proceeds paid them off.

And the bond of loyalty has bound me, so I have not found

a way out; otherwise, bidding them farewell would be easy for me.
