مُكحُلةٌa kohl-pot تَجمعُgathers أميالَهاher kohl-sticks
مُكحُلةٌ تَجمعُ أميالَها
ولاand not أَرىI see مِيلَينِtwo kohl-sticks فيin مُكحُلَهa kohl-pot
ولا أَرى مِيلَينِ في مُكحُلَه
A kohl-pot gathers her kohl-sticks,
Kohl-lined eyes gather her miles
And I see no two kohl-sticks in a kohl-pot.
Yet I see no leaning in her kohl
يَقولُsays مَنwhoever باتَspent the night ضَجيعاًa bedfellow لَهاwith her
يَقولُ مَن باتَ ضَجيعاً لَها
لاmay … not كانَhave been هَذاthis اللَّيلُthe night ماhow أطوَلَهlong it is
لا كانَ هَذا اللَّيلُ ما أطوَلَه
Whoever spends the night as her bedfellow says:
He who spent the night laid next to her would say
May this night never have been—how long it is!
If only this night were longer
