وقَالوا إِذ عَلوتُ على حُميدٍ

وسرتُ وسارَ يأمرُني ويَنهَى

And they said, when I rose above Hamid,

And I went, and he went, commanding and forbidding me:

أتَعلُو فوقَ أعلَى النَّاسِ قَدراً

فقُلتُ نَعَم دُخانُ النَّارِ مِنها

فقُلتُ نَعَم دُخانُ النَّارِ مِنها

“Do you rise above the highest of people in rank?”

Do you rise above the highest of people in worth?

So I said, “Yes—the fire’s smoke is higher than the fire.”

So I said, "Yes, the smoke of the fire comes from it."
