And rarely has Time passed judgment

on a man without doing him wrong.

And I see its calamities swift,

light-footed when they seek me out,

gathered against me; I had been

    reckoning a single one enough.

And when, for a young man, the nights strove

    in opposition to his will,

and singled him out for their injustice,

    al-Husayn ibn al-Muʿāfā acted justly,

then began extending the hand of bounty

amid their calamities, to redress the wrong.
