والآن فاشهد أنني تائبٌ

من بعدها يا ابنَ أبي التائبِ

من بعدها يا ابنَ أبي التائبِ

And now, bear witness that I am repentant,

Now witness that I repent

after that, O son of Abu al-Ta'ib.

After her, O son of the repentant one

لا أحسنُ الظن وحوشيتَ من

لا أحسنُ الظن وحوشيتَ من

قولي لمصحوبٍ ولا صاحبِ

قولي لمصحوبٍ ولا صاحبِ

I hold no good opinion—and you are exempt from

I do not think well, and my hostility towards

my words—of one I accompany or one who accompanies me.

My friend and companion was wrong

إن أعرضوا عني فأعراضُهم

إن أعرضوا عني فأعراضُهم

من الثناءِ اللازم اللازبِ

من الثناءِ اللازم اللازبِ

If they turn away from me, their reputations

If they turn away from me, their turning away

stem from praise that is constant and abiding.

Is a persistent, clinging praise

أو أفرَدوني إذ رَأَوا أنني

أو أفرَدوني إذ رَأَوا أنني

فردٌ من الناس فبالواجبِ

فردٌ من الناس فبالواجبِ

Or if they set me apart, having seen that I

Or if they excluded me when they saw that I

am unique among people, then rightly so.

Am an individual among people, as deserved

ها أنا ذا مِن بَين أهلِ الندى

ها أنا ذا مِن بَين أهلِ الندى

والمجدِ من بانٍ ومن كاتبِ

والمجدِ من بانٍ ومن كاتبِ

Here I am among the people of generosity

And glory, of the eloquent and the scribe

and glory, builders and writers alike,

I sell my clothes, and if only they

أبيعُ أثوابي ويا لَيتها

أبيعُ أثوابي ويا لَيتها

تقومُ لي بالقائِم الراتبِ

تقومُ لي بالقائِم الراتبِ

selling my clothes—if only they

Would support me with a regular wage

would provide me with steady, regular sustenance.
