وطوَّفتُهاand I took it around بينَamong الأنامِhumankind مُخيِّراًgiving a choice
فَماso not وَقَفَتit stopped إِلاexcept عَلىat ابنِson of مُبارَكِMubarak
And I took it around among humankind, letting it choose;
I paraded her among the people as I chose,
So it stopped only at Ibn Mubarak,
Yet she paused only at the son of Mubārak.
علىat قائِمٍone steadfast بالجودِin generosity غيرwithout مُقاومٍa rival
ومُنفَرِدٍand one standing alone بالمَجدِin glory غَيرِwithout مُشاركِa partner
At one steadfast in generosity, unrivaled,
Standing by generosity, unresisted,
And alone in glory, with none to share it.
Singular in glory, with no partner.
إِذاif خِفتَyou fear صَرفَthe reversals of الدَّهرِtime فادرِكthen reach يَمينَهhis right hand
تَجِدyou will find بَحرَهاits sea يَرميcasts forth بِمَوجٍwith waves مُداركِsuccessive
If you fear the reversals of time, reach for his right hand;
If you fear the turning of fate, take hold of its right hand,
You will find its sea casting forth wave after wave.
You will find its sea casting forth a rescuing wave.
وقُلand say حينَwhen تلقاهاyou meet it لَقَدindeed كنتُI was خائِفاًafraid
ببُعدِكbecause of your distance عَنِّيfrom me قَرَّبَmay bring near اللَّهُGod داركِyour dwelling
And say, when you meet it: "I was indeed afraid
And say when you meet it: “Indeed, I was afraid
Because you were far from me—may God bring your dwelling near.
Of your distance from me.” God brought you near, my home.
فقَدfor indeed عَدلَhas become just الدهرُtime الذيwhich كانَwas جائِراًunjust
وكيفَand how يخافُfears الجورَinjustice منwhoever كانَis جاركِyour neighbor
For time, once unjust, has become just;
So fate, which was unfair, has now been just,
And how can one who is your neighbor fear injustice?"
And how can injustice be feared by one whose neighbor is you?
