لقدindeed جُرتَyou have been unjust ياO فَيضَflood of الدُّمُوعthe tears السَّواجمِstreaming
After my secret, is any secret left for someone to conceal?
Shall a secret be left after my secret to a confidant
Truly, you have been unjust, O flood of streaming tears.
You have been unfair, O torrent of pouring tears
خُذِseize النَّاسَthe people جَمعاًall together بالبُكاءِwith weeping لنَستَويso we may be equal
وإلاand if not فَلِمthen why أفرَدتَنيyou singled me out باللَّوائِمِfor reproaches
Seize all people with weeping, that we may be equal;
Take all people together with weeping so we become equal
otherwise, why have you singled me out for reproach?
Otherwise why have you singled me out for blame?

Yet holding back tears in the eye of one languishing,
Indeed, holding back tears in the eye of a grieving,
grief-stricken, is like wrath in the breast of one who suppresses it.
melancholic person is like suppressing rage in the breast of one who holds it in

I say to a caravan: Return; if you reach safety,
I say to a caravan, turn back if you are safe
then say: We left him, and he is not well.
And say: we left him, though he is not safe

Whenever we treat him, his illness flares up still more
When we tried curing him, his relapse upon us increased
on our hands, as though love were one of the deadly poisons.
As if love were some of the poisons

Ah, would that the masters of passion would restrain it,
Oh, if only the masters of passion would restrain him
as they commanded it to violate sacred bounds.
As they commanded him to violate taboos

For nothing deceived me but the languor of glancing eyes,
Nothing tempted me except the indifference of glances
whose deadly assaults are like spears and keen swords.
That have lethal blows like spears and swords

They stand in the way of patience; war is deceit,
They hinder patience, and war is deception
especially the warfare of tender beauties.
Especially the war of beautiful gazelles

If the horses of calamity gallop in pursuit of me,
If the steeds of misfortunes race toward me
then the hands of bounty grasp the bridle-bits,
Then the hands of gifts will be grabbing the bridles

to hold them back from me; and that is because I
To withhold them from me, for I
recounted my grievances to Ibn al-Mazalimi,
Have recounted my darknesses to the son of injustices

Abu al-Hasan, who strives with diligence and resolve
O Abu Al-Hasan, striving with all earnestness and resolve
for honorable mention of his name at the seasonal gatherings.
Toward benevolence, from the mention of which is joy in seasons

He goes forth evening and morning to earn praise,
He is quick to earn praise and is aggressive
when people's concern is earning dirhams.
When people's concern is earning money

And if people sit back from generosity's duty
And if people neglect the duty of munificence
and the obligation of giving, he is the first to rise.
And the right of gifts, he is the first to stand

A young man: before his face is seen, there appear
A young man whose good health and noble countenance
to the supplicant seeking him the faces of noble deeds.
Appeared, for the one seeking him, the faces of generous deeds

His joy grows whenever he gains another petitioner,
He increases in joy whenever one comes seeking
as though he longs for every newcomer.
As if he has a longing for every newcomer

It is as though what his supplicants receive from him
As if his chastity which meets the one seeking him
were a dreamer's dream, so lavish is his generosity.
Is, from his exceeding generosity, a dreamer's patience

It is as though glory were his inheritance; and Muhammad,
As if nobility is his inheritance, so Muhammad
his brother, shares it like a partner dividing an estate.
Is his brother in it, like a partner dividing shares

Whenever one builds glory, the other builds it in his footsteps;
When he builds glory, he builds it pursuing
yet how many a builder spends the night plagued by a destroyer!
While many a builder wears away with a demolisher

I saw glory cling to the two sons of Ali,
I saw glory clinging to the two sons of Ali
to this one and that one, like a creditor who never leaves.
To this one and that, like a creditor insisting

This one vies with that one for every petitioner,
This one rivals that in seeking every desirer
to win him, acting as an evenly matched rival would.
To have the equal of its peer's defiance

People have indeed settled in lofty stations; whoever strives
And the people have abandoned high ambitions, so whoever strives
for them with the effort they deserve ends up with few rivals.
For them has the fewest rivals in his striving
