أناI مُعجَبٌenamored بالمُعجَبِof the conceited one التَّيَّاهِhaughty
مُتَغَلغِلٌdeeply immersed فيin حُبِّهِlove for him مُتَناهيreaching the utmost limit
I am enamored of the conceited, haughty one,
I'm infatuated with the ostentatious one
Deeply immersed in love for him, reaching its utmost bounds.
Immersed in his love, infinitely
يَزهُوhe vaunts himself عليَّover me وأغتَديand I become ذاpossessed of لَوعَةٍburning longing
عَجَباًhow strange! لفُرقَتِناat our parting وكلٌّand each زاهِيproud
He vaunts himself over me, and I become consumed by longing;
He prides himself on me, while I suffer longing
How strange our parting, when each of us is proud!
How odd our separation is, though each one prideful
غابَتvanished محاسِنُthe beauties of وَجههِhis face فاشتَقتُهاso I longed for them
فَتَصوَّرَتso they took the form of أخلاقَthe virtues of عَبدِAbd (servant of) اللَّهِAllah (God)
The beauties of his face vanished, so I longed for them;
His beautiful face has disappeared, so I longed for it
So they took the form of Abd Allah's virtues.
And pictured the morals of Abdullah
أضحَىbecame النَّدىgenerosity شِبهاًa likeness لهof him ومَدائِحيand my praises
أَرَأيتَhave you seen? كيفَhow تَجانُسُmutual resemblance الأَشباهِlike things
Generosity has become his likeness, and so have my praises;
The dew has become a likeness of him and my poems
Have you seen how like things resemble one another?
Have you seen how similarities harmonize?
ياO ابنَson of المفرِّجِal-Mufarrij واللَّياليand the nights أنعمٌblessings
إلاexcept عليّfor me فإنَّهنَّfor they are دَواهيcalamities
O son of al-Mufarrij, the nights are blessings,
Oh son of relief and nights of comfort
Except for me, for they are calamities.
Except for me, for they are ruinous
يأبَينَthey refuse طولَthroughout الدَّهرِall time أنto يَلقَينَنيthey meet me
إلاexcept ذَواتِpossessed of جَهالةٍignorance وسَفاهِand folly
They refuse, throughout all time, to meet me
They refuse the length of time to meet me
Except possessed of ignorance and folly.
Except those of ignorance and foolishness
قَصُرَتfell short يَدايَmy two hands فَدقَّso dwindled جاهيmy standing عِندهاwith them
طُولُthe length of اليَدَينِthe two hands يَزيدُincreases عَرضَthe breadth of الجاهِstanding
My hands fell short, so my standing with them dwindled;
My hands fell short so his glory knocked
Long hands increase the breadth of one's standing.
The length of hands increases the width of glory
وأَراكَand I see you فيin طلَبِpursuit of العُلىthe heights of glory ذاpossessed of قُوَّةٍstrength
فامسِكso sustain بهاwith it رَمَقَthe last breath of الضَّعيفِthe weak one الواهيfrail
And I see you strong in pursuit of the heights of glory;
And I see you seeking the heights with strength
So with it sustain the last breath of the weak and frail.
So hold onto it before the feeble fading one
