يَسرُّكَdelights you سرٌّa secret بَينهنَّamong them ويُحزِنُand saddens
حدَيثٌa tale يَلينُgrows tender القَلبُthe heart منهfrom it ويخشُنُand grows hard
A secret among them delights and saddens you:
A secret pleases you among them, though
a tale at which the heart softens and hardens.
A tale saddens and hardens the heart.
سَعينَthey hastened إليهاto her إذwhen رَأينَكthey saw you مُغرَماًenamored
فضمَّنَّهاso they charged her تَبريدَcooling ماwhat يَتَضمَّنُit contains
They hastened to her when they saw you enamored,
They hastened to you when they saw you lovesick,
so they charged her with cooling what the heart contains.
So they gathered to cool the burning within.

منfrom الحُسنِbeauty عُذرٌan excuse فيfor التَّدَلُّلِcoyness يَحسُنُis fitting
Whenever they reproached her for shunning you, she found
When she is shy with you, her beauty
in beauty a fitting excuse for coyness.
Excuses her gentle coquetry.
وياand O أيُّهاO العَهدُthe pledge الَّذيthat كانَwas بَينَناbetween us
إليكَto you اختَصَمناwe disputed أيُّناwhich of us كانَwas أخوَنُmore faithless
And O pledge that once was between us,
O pact that was between us,
before you we disputed which of us was more faithless.
We disputed which of us was more loving.
وليand I have مُهجةٌa soul فاضَتoverflowed وغاضَتand ran dry دُمُوعُهاits tears
وذاكand that علىof ماwhat بيis in me أدلُّmore telling وأبيَنُand clearer
And my soul has overflowed, while its tears have run dry,
My passions overflowed and my tears poured down,
and that is more telling, clearer evidence of what ails me.
That reveals my feelings more clearly.
وَيَبلغُand carries بيme قَلبيmy heart وعَينيand my eye منthrough الهَوىlove
إلىto حيثُwhere لمdid not تَبلُغreach قُلوبٌhearts وأعيُنُand eyes
And in love my heart and eye carry me
My heart and eyes have reached heights of love
to where no hearts or eyes have reached.
No other hearts or eyes have attained.
فأيُّso what مَكانٍplace منwith أخيmy brother لمُلِمَّةٍfor a calamity
يشاركنيshares with me فيin مرِّهاits bitterness أتَمكَّنُI establish myself
So what place with my brother in calamity,
In what place can I find a bosom friend
whose bitterness he shares with me, can I secure?
To share her bitterness that I endure?
نِداءٌa call إِذاif نادَيتُI call to دهريmy fate بمثلهِwith its like
ورقَّand it softened وأصغىand listened فالجوابُthen the answer المحسِّنُal-Muhassin
A call—if I call to my fate with one like it,
A call, if I called out in my time,
and it softens and listens, the answer is al-Muhassin.
That would gentle and favorably respond.
وهلand is there بعدَafter رأيِseeing العَينِthe eye رأيٌan opinion لِناقضٍfor an objector
عَليهagainst it إليهto him فيin النَّوائبِcalamities أسكُنُI find repose
And after the eye's own witness, can an objector offer an opinion
After the sight of the eye, can another view
against it? To him I turn for solace in calamities.
Contradict it? In grief, I take comfort in it.
إذاwhen يَدُهhis hand طالَتreached out إلىto صَرفِaverting صَرفِهits reversals

أطالَتit lengthened لِسانيmy tongue حيثُwhere تَقصرُfall short ألسُنُtongues
When his hand reaches out to avert fate's reversals,
When his hand is stretched out to deflect his deflection,
it lengthens my tongue where other tongues fall short.
My tongue is stretched out where tongues fall short.

فَيَمضيso it cuts through ومالٍand wealth للمكارِمfor noble deeds يُخزَنُis stored
A young man with resolve unsheathed against calamities,
A young man decisive in harsh trials,
which cuts through, and wealth stored for noble deeds.
Proceeding, and wealth for generous deeds stored,
وحدّاهُand his two edges منof أصلٍlineage وسَعدٍand good fortune تقارناhave converged

فمالهماso they have no إلاexcept السِّماكانِthe two Simak stars مَسكنُdwelling
And his two edges—lineage and good fortune—have converged,
Fortune matched his origin and auspiciousness,
so their only dwelling is the two Simak stars.
Their abode was nothing but the heights.
وصدرٌand a breast غَداgrew منfrom قَلبِهhis heart مُتوَهِّناًfeeble

وأعظَمُand the greatest مَحمولٍburden يَهدُّcrushes ويُوهِنُand weakens
And a breast made feeble by his heart—
A chest it same from a softened heart,
for the greatest burden crushes and weakens—
The greatest burdens it gently bears.

when the lofty honor that has always been his
The sublime honor which has always belonged
is paired with the noblest deeds of humankind.
To the noblest deeds of mankind.
تَجودُyou give generously ولَيسَand is not الجودُgenerosity مَدحاًpraise لِمثلِكُمfor those like you
إذاwhen كانَit is منfrom أخلاقِكمyour character يَتكوَّنُtakes shape
You give generously, yet generosity is no praise for those like you,
You give generously - generosity is no praise to your like,
when it springs from your own character.
Since it is part of your nature.

I saw the rhymes as lovely women, and praise of you
I saw the rhymes like pearls and your praise
as necklaces for them, with which they have come to adorn themselves.
Are necklaces they adorn themselves with.
