طالَت لجاجَةُ آيسٍ مُتَقاضي
فتَعَرَّضَتand so it was exposed للصَّدِّto rebuff والإعراضِand disregard
فتَعَرَّضَت للصَّدِّ والإعراضِ
A despairing claimant's insistence has dragged on,
and so was exposed to rebuff and disregard.

If one rebuffed in anguish were to take offense,
his request denied, he would not return content.

Yet these are love's paths; the fittest among you
to tread them is the indulgent, forbearing one.

And one who sets the limbs at odds is fearful
of a champion, quick to rise in redress of my wrong.

What lies in my breast differs from what lies in my heart;
how far apart are ghada embers and garden blossoms!

أجسامُهم بهواهُ كالأعراضِ
until he departed, and I followed them among a band
whose bodies, for love of him, were like insubstantial attributes.

فالحِقَّةُ الكَوماءُ بنتُ مخاضِ
Their riding camels departed, thinned by the night journey,
so the high-humped three-year-old she-camel became a yearling.

And misfortunes deem some of my resolves,
in what I attempt, flashes of rainless lightning.

You clothed this frontier stronghold in Davidic mail,
whose sides turn back the keen-edged sword.

And you kept to ways of treating its ailment
with its remedy, and so it escaped disease.

And you gave your wealth to safeguard your faith, certain
that you would receive no recompense before the Resurrection.

And you began to stride proudly between your might and bounty,
ranging from a deadly slayer to an overflowing giver.

How excellent you are: in crises, a rescuer
from them; in perilous depths, a bold wader.
