لعَقربِ الصُّدغِ فما تَلسَعُ
I taught his cheek a protective charm
I taught my cheek patience
against the scorpion of his temple, so it does not sting.
So the scorpion's sting does not hurt
صُمَّتwas deafened عَنto العاذلِthe reproacher فيconcerning حبِّهlove for him
صُمَّت عَن العاذلِ في حبِّه
أُذنيmy ear فَماليso I have no مِسمَعٌear يَسمَعُthat hears
أُذني فَمالي مِسمَعٌ يَسمَعُ
Deaf to the reproacher concerning my love for him
I deafened my ears to the blamer in his love
is my ear; so I have no ear that hears.
So what hearing do I have that hears
