أسَمَوتَ أم سَقطَت بي الهِمَمُ
How can the passage of time alter your pledge?
Have you risen high, or have my aspirations brought me low?

Or is this because of a kindness you first bestowed,
in which our foot slipped away from those deserving it?

And by my deliverance from what I endure
on your account, O Salama—this is an oath—

I shall surely tug against you at the cord of your affection until
its strength gives way and it snaps.
