How many times have I said to the rain cloud when it appeared,

confronting me with its lordly bank of cloud:

“Take heed—do not bar my path; let me

gain my allotted share from Abu al-Jaysh Hamid.”

But when it would accept nothing but obstinacy, it made plain to me

that this, on its part, was an envier’s scheme

against your right hand—for your right hand is swifter in giving,

more steadfastly patient in the face of hardships,

has more seekers than anything in creation,

and lavishes more bounty upon every seeker.

What business, then, have clouds of water barring me from a noble youth

whose fingertips are clouds of bounty?
