The swords of the sons of Humayd gleamed after
They had rusted, and it had been long since they met the Romans.
وتَذكَّرواand they recalled أيامَهمtheir days فأتَواso they came بِهاwith them
مَثَلاًas an example يُمثِّلُlikening مُحدثاًsomething new بقَديمِto something old
They recalled their days and brought them forth
As an example, likening the new to the old.
فاستَنقَدواso they rescued الإِسلامَIslam بعدafter حكُومَتيmy judgment
والمُسلِمينَand the Muslims عَليهِupon it بالتَّسليمِto surrender
So they rescued Islam after I had judged,
Along with the Muslims, that it must surrender.
لماwhen رَأيتُI saw البُلغَريَّthe Bulgarian لِموجِهِfor his wave
مَوجُa wave of القَضاءِfate المُبرَمِirrevocable المَحتومِinevitable
When I saw the Bulgarian—his wave facing
The wave of irrevocable, inevitable fate—
يَغزوhe invades الشَّآمal-Sham وليسَand he does not يَعلمُknow أنَّthat فيin
غَزوِthe invasion of الشَّآمِal-Sham عليهِagainst him غَزوَan invasion of الشُّومِill fortune
Invading al-Sham, unaware that in
Invading al-Sham he faced an invasion of ill fortune,
ودَعاand he called عُبيدَUbayd اللَّهِAllah قلتُI said لهto him انتَظِرwait
لَيسَis not الَّذيthe one whom نبَّهتَهyou roused him بِنَؤومِa heavy sleeper
And he called Ubayd Allah, I told him: Wait—
The one you have roused is no heavy sleeper.
والبَحرُand the sea منamong جُندِthe troops of الكَريمِthe generous man لأنَّهbecause it
عِندَamid الصِّعابِhardships نَسيبُkin to كلِّevery كَريمِgenerous man
And the sea is among the generous man's troops, for it
In hardship is kin to every generous man.
أوand (introducing a question) ماnot بهِto it أبَداًalways يُشَبِّهُhe likens نَفسَهhimself
سَعةًin vastness عَلىfor التَّفخيمِmagnification والتَّعظيمِand exaltation
And does he not always liken himself to it
In vastness, to magnify and exalt himself?
فعَلامَso why يُسلمُهُit surrenders him إلَيكَto you وإنَّماand in fact only
أولَىmore deserving بِذلكَof that منهُthan he أهلُpeople of اللُّومِbaseness
Then why should it surrender him to you, when
The ignoble are more deserving of that than he?
ألقَيتَyou flung نفسَكَyourself حينَwhen مسَّكَstruck you بأسُهُhis might
متبرِّداًcooling yourself بالماءِwith water غَيرnot مَلُومِblamed
You flung yourself when his might struck you,
Cooling yourself in the water, without blame.
لَمdid not تَرضَyou accept إِلاexcept بِالفرارِwith flight كأنَّماas though
ريحُthe wind of الشَّمالِthe north علَيكَupon you ريحُa wind of سمومِscorching heat
You would accept nothing but flight, as though
The north wind upon you were a scorching wind.

بكَafter you فيinto الهَلاكِdestruction وفازَand survived كلُّevery هَزيمِfugitive
Among a band that did as you did, then followed
You into destruction, while every fugitive survived.
وغَداand became جَوادُكَyour steed للجَوادِfor the generous man جَنيبةًa led horse

And your steed became a led horse for the generous man,
Dragged like a full-grown camel in a nose-halter.
والصَّيفُand summer مَوعِدُthe appointed time for مَنwhoever تَبَقَّىremains مِنكُمof you
هَذاthis ابتِداءٌa beginning لَيسَis not بالمَختومِfinished
And summer is the appointed time for those of you who remain;
This is a beginning; it is not finished.
