An eyelid is shut upon the thorns of the qatad bush,

And burning sorrow races ahead to where desire lies.

And to my visitor, like a far-fetched conjecture

Is my anguish; it remains so until confirmed.

Can one conceal his ardent longing, who has

In every limb a tongue that speaks?

And as though his heart's blood, from his eyelid,

Were a fire from which scorching sparks fly.

And as though his cheek were a devotee's arched niche,

And the tears a lamp suspended upon it.

And as though his streaming tear-duct and his body

Were a weeper over one wasted away, distraught and full of pity.

Overtake your secrets, which you set astride

The swift camels of tears—for they cannot be overtaken.

Do not marvel at my two eyes when they

Shed tears, while the deeply yearning heart is in your hand.

For the two witnesses, the two witnesses to love,

Have asked you what the freed captive has done.

I am separation's prey if, at parting, I do not steel

My resolve for where dispersal strikes terror.

Where keen swords and skulls keep company,

And helmets are split by slender white blades.

And where the Mashrafi swords' pledge to throats

Is firmer than our pledge of affection to you.

    فَانشقَّ لي مِنها صَباحٌ مُشرِقُ

    The darknesses of Dhu al-Qarnayn were my paths;

Then a radiant morning broke forth for me from them.

And in Nizar I saw as light all

The hardship I meet, and that the she-camels meet.

And where Egypt has no need of rain,

Thanks to the rains of his palm, which pour forth.

The light of truth meets you before you meet him

There, though gates are shut between you both.

The Prophet's family are the Prophet; only

By revelation were they distinguished, and so set apart.

    أهلُ الرِّسالةِ بِالإمامَةِ أليَقُ

    The imamate refused to befit any but them;

The people of the Message are fitter for the imamate.

Thus you see that the noblest acquired generosity only

From the surplus of what they gave freely and bestowed in charity.

And as though al-Aziz's character had arisen for them

Before his body's creation, and so they adopted it.

O you who divorce the world thrice through generosity,

Out of renunciation—yet three divorces cannot put it away.

At how many a watering place you have kept opening the way for my departure

From it, while banners of glory flutter for me!

So I set out, while fate lies awake for me,

And return while it bows its head in awe.

Good fortune has already come to Abd al-Muhsin through you,

And through love for you; so his path is trodden.

And his inability to praise you has indeed become clear,

Utterly clear, though he goes to extremes and exaggerates.
