Sing to me, O dearest to me of all these people.

Greet Najd and those in Najd's environs.

And give me to drink what turns a miser

into Hatim, and a coward into Amr ibn Ma'd.

I have—by the roses upon your cheeks—

    wine like musk, rose-colored.

So pour me a brimming cup of it, for the night is laid bare

by a crescent like a finger-span of laurel.

And the Pleiades flutter on the wing of the

west, sinking as though they were a cheetah's head.

    فَهذا من أول الدنِّ دُردي

    In youth's season, gray hair overtook me too soon;

so here are dregs from the cask's very beginning.
