وضمَّرت قَلبي حينَ أضمرتُ عُذرَه

وضمَّرت قَلبي حينَ أضمرتُ عُذرَه

بحبِّك لما اشتدَّ بي وتَوثَّقا

And I made my heart lean while harboring its excuse

My heart was filled with sorrow when I excused him,

For loving you, when love grew strong in me and took firm hold.

In my love for you that grew and was secured,

ودرَّجتُه بينَ البُيوتِ أُروضه

ودرَّجتُه بينَ البُيوتِ أُروضه

وقلتُ عساهُ أن يَفوتَ فَيَسبِقا

وقلتُ عساهُ أن يَفوتَ فَيَسبِقا

And I made it pace among the houses, training it,

And I led him through the homes to tame him,

And said, 'Perhaps it will escape and race ahead.'

Saying maybe he will slip away and take the lead,

وأعلمتُه أينَ السلوّ وقلتُ سِر

وأعلمتُه أينَ السلوّ وقلتُ سِر

أدلّكَ واسرِع ما استَطَعتَ لتلحَقا

أدلّكَ واسرِع ما استَطَعتَ لتلحَقا

And I told it where forgetfulness lay and said, 'Go;

And I told him where was the path and said go,

I will guide you; hurry as fast as you can to reach it.'

Guide yourself and hurry as fast as you can to catch up,

فَما زادَني إِلا التِفاتاً وصَبوةً

فَما زادَني إِلا التِفاتاً وصَبوةً

إليكَ وإلا لَوعةً وتَحرُّقا

إليكَ وإلا لَوعةً وتَحرُّقا

Yet it only increased my glances and longing

But it only increased my turning to you and passion,

Toward you, and only my anguish and burning.

And burning love and longing, except,

يُمثَّل لي أن الكَنائِسَ كلَّها

يُمثَّل لي أن الكَنائِسَ كلَّها

كِناسٌ إِذا مُثِّلتَ فيها مُشرِّقا

كِناسٌ إِذا مُثِّلتَ فيها مُشرِّقا

It seems to me that all the churches

It was portrayed to me that all churches,

Are a gazelle's covert when you are pictured in them, facing east.

Are churches when you are portrayed in them shining.
