رَدَدتُI returned عَلىto موسىMusa بنson of هارونHarun بِرَّهُhis bounty
وكنتُand I have been عَلىtoward الأَحرارِthe noble men مُذsince كنتُI existed مُحتاطاcautious
I returned Musa ibn Harun's bounty to him,
I responded to Musa ibn Harun with all goodness
And all my life I have been cautious with noble men.
And I was generous to the free people since I was very cautious
وقدَّمتُand I put first حُسنَgoodness الظَنِّof opinion ثمَّthen جَلدتُهI flogged him
علىfor ماwhat افتَرىhe fabricated عِنديin my presence مِنof القَولِspeech أَسواطاlashes
And I gave him the benefit of the doubt, then flogged him
I gave him the benefit of the doubt, then I whipped him
With lashes for the words he fabricated in my presence.
For the lies he told about me with many lashes
نعودُwe return إلىto مُوسىMusa فإنَّfor indeed حَديثَهhis tale
عَجيبٌstrange وإنand even if طاشَlost his composure الحَليمُthe forbearing man وإنand even if شاطاburned with rage
We return to Musa, for his tale
Let's return to Musa, for his words
Is strange, even if the forbearing man loses his composure, and even if he burns with rage.
Are strange, even if the forbearing one raged and lashed out
يقصِّرُfalls short عمَّاof what يأكلُhe eats اليومَtoday حالُهhis means
ويبذلُand he offers بالقَولِin words الرَّغائِبَrich gifts إفراطاexcessively
His means fall short of what he eats today,
He falls short of what his situation today eats
And in words he offers rich gifts to excess.
And is excessive in offering tempting words
وقَدand indeed بلغَhas reached العافينَthe seekers of gifts ذاكَthat فَأَصبَحواso they became
عَلىat بابِهhis door منfrom سائِرall of النَّاسِthe people أَخلاطاa motley crowd
And that has reached the seekers of gifts, so they are now
That reached the healthy ones, so they came
At his door, a motley crowd from among all the people.
To his door from all kinds of people, mixed crowds
وماand what بالُهhis state لاnot يُتبعُhe follows with القولَthe words فعلَهhis action
إِذاif كانَare ديناراهُhis two dinars عِشرينَtwenty قِيراطاqirats
And why does he not follow his words with his deeds,
Why doesn't he match his words with his actions
If his two dinars amount to twenty qirats?
When his dinars are only twenty carats
