فجورُواso be unjust فلاfor neither بالجَورِthrough injustice أسلُوI forget ولاnor العَدلِjustice
What you think brings solace increases my sorrow.
My sorrow increases, though you have no more to offer
So be unjust: neither injustice nor justice makes me forget.
Act unjustly, for neither fairness nor foul play console me
ولاnor هُوit قَلبيmy heart يومَon a day when لاnot يَنتَهيleads بهwith it

وِصالٌunion إلىto شُغلٍpreoccupation وهَجرٌand estrangement إلىto خَتلِguile
Nor is it my heart on a day when it is not led
Nor does my heart find peace in ceaseless union
by union into preoccupation, and by estrangement into guile.
Or separation leading to distraction and discord
بعَذلٍfor reproach عَصاهُit defied it أوor بوَجدٍfor passion أطاعَهit obeyed it
بأيّهماfor which of the two أوجبتَهاyou decreed it فيin الهوىlove قَتليmy death
For a reproach it defied, or a passion it obeyed—
With one you punished into obedience, or another left free in desire
for which of the two did you decree my death in love?
Tell me which of the two you decreed should slay me?

And many an eye whose eyelids are akin to a keen sword,
How many a glance like an unsheathed blade
needing no polish, despite long swordplay.
Disdaining to be burnished, careless of its shine

It has the final say in shedding blood for what it sees;
With power over spilling blood, so casually they watch
while my eye, rather than it, bears the trace of the deed.
While my eyes, beyond their gaze, betray my deeds
وزَهرةِand a blossom خدٍّof a cheek ماnot سقَتهاwatered it دُموعُهhis tears

And a cheek's blossom, which his tears have never watered:
The blossom of a cheek no tears could water
thus the most fragrant flowers grow in drought.
Yet sorrow’s bloom is the brightest in that place
وليسand is not سوادَthe blackness of الصُّدغthe sidelock فيon الخدِّthe cheek تارِكاًleaving

Nor does the blackness of the sidelock on the cheek leave
The darkness of the mole amid the cheek leaves
the dark cores of lovers' hearts unoccupied.
Black as the hearts of lovers, beyond console

Whenever I think he has excused me in love,
When we were alone, he revealed the reason in desire
his nature insists on persisting in reproaching me.
His nature refused to linger, insisting on my blame

Let love wreak whatever ruin it wishes upon my lifeblood;
Leave love to ruin my heart as it pleases
for its dwelling falls, and its garment wears out.
Its dwelling crumbles and its clothes wear thin
وتلكَand that one التيwhich أمسَىhas come to يُنازِعُكcontends with you الهَوىpassion

And that which passion has come to contend with you
She, for whose love you struggle and vie
over—let it go, and counter the hard with the easy.
Leave her be, and take the rugged path to the plain

إذاwhen سمَحتthey were generous بالعيشِwith life عَيشاًa life بِلاwithout ذلِّhumiliation
For these days do not leave us,
For these days do not leave us
when they grant us life, a life without humiliation.
To live, even briefly, without disgrace and humiliation

Look with a fair-minded person's eyes: do you see in them
Consider my eyes dispassionately, can you envision
any merit except what Abu al-Fadl saw?
Any merit but what Abu Al-Fadl has seen?
أتاكَreached you حَديثيmy news أنَّنيthat I بينَamong مَعشَرٍa company

My news has reached you: I am among a company,
Word came to you, I am among a people
shuttled among them from rejection to delay.
Wavering between refusal and return to my abode
كأنَّas though اللياليthe nights ياO أباAbu (father of) الفَضلal-Fadl ألزَمَتcompelled
أكارمَهاtheir noblest men تركَabandoning التكرُّمِgenerosity منfor أجليmy sake
It is as though the nights, O Abu al-Fadl, have compelled
As if the nights, oh Abu Al-Fadl, have destined
their noblest men to abandon generosity on my account.
Their most generous one to forgo all generosity toward me
وأجودُهُمand their most generous منone who خَصَّsingled out بالبَذلِfor giving عرضَهhis honor
وماand not سائِرُthe rest of الأشياءِthings تَصلحُare fit للبَذلِfor giving
And their most generous is he who gives away only his honor,
The most liberal among them is he who spared no expense
and nothing else is fit to be given.
Of himself, though nothing else is worthy of expense
