And if time has placed me

in the twin plights of destitution and debt,

it is because my people have the king

of the Romans standing between them and me.

    Death appears before them,

    blue-eyed, with both hands free.

Grief has dealt justly between us,

in judgment, with the justice of Abu al-Husayn.

So it is as though they grieved with my heart

at separation, and wept with my eyes.

He is gentle in nature and conduct,

    lavish in bounty and open-handed;

it is as though he and glory share

the conjunction of the two Farqad stars.
