ومُعتَذرِand one apologizing العِذارthe cheek-down إلىto فُؤاديmy heart
لجرمٍfor an offense سابقٍearlier منfrom مُقلَتَيهِhis two eyes
And one whose cheek-down begged my heart's pardon
The one who apologizes for his misdeeds to my heart
For an earlier offense committed by his two eyes.
For an earlier sin from his two eyelids
وكَمand how often أعرَضتُI turned away عَنهfrom him فأعرضَتbut it turned بيme
عنfrom الإعراضِturning away خُضرةُthe greenness عارِضَيهِhis two cheeks
And how often I turned away from him, yet I was turned
And how often have I turned away from him, yet the greenness of his tender cheeks
From turning away by the green down on his cheeks.
Turned away from my turning away from him
ولَمَّاand when قُلتُI said إنَّthat الشعرthe hair يَسعَىstrives
لقَلبيfor my heart فيin الخَلاصِdeliverance سَعَىit strove عَليهِagainst it
And when I said that the hair was striving
And when I said poetry seeks
To free my heart, it strove against it.
My heart for deliverance, he sought it for me
