فيin الحبِّlove إِلاexcept أَنthat يَكونَit be فِراقاseparation
Have you seen in me fear of any misfortune
Have you seen in me any distress of love
In love, unless it be separation?
Except that it may be parting?
ذلُّhumiliation التَّهاجرِmutual estrangement كالتَّواصُلِlike union عندَماwhen
لاقىencountered مُحبُّكَyour lover فيin الهَوىpassion ماwhat لاقىhe encountered
The humiliation of estrangement is like that of union, when
The hardship of estrangement is like connection when
Your lover has suffered in love what he has suffered.
Your lover has met in passion what he met.
وجفونِby the eyelids of غانِيَةٍa beautiful woman رَمَتshot فتَراهَنَتand so wagered themselves
أَرواحُناour souls لنِصالِهاfor her arrowheads أَسباقاas prizes
By a beauty’s eyelids, which shot; then were staked
And the eyelids of a singer have aimed, so they competed
Our souls, as prizes for her arrowheads.
Our spirits for their arrows raced.
لاnot يَعشقُlove العُشاقُthe lovers منfrom لَحَظاتِهاher glances

Lovers love nothing from her glances
The lovers do not love of their moments
But a sickness that loves lovers.
Except sickness that the lovers love.

She turned away; I did not lose heart, and said in hope:
She turned away, so I did not despair, and I said, hoping
He who restored Ishaq to me will bring her back.
He will return her as Isaac returned to me.

ياO أَيُّهاyou الزَّمنُTime الخَؤونever-treacherous وعاقاand hindered
After your reversals had come between me and him,
After what your circumstance has prevented
O treacherous Time, and kept him away.
O you, time of sorrows and barrenness.
وصبرتُand I endured patiently للعَيشِwith life الذيwhich كدَّرتَهyou clouded it
حتَّىuntil صَفاit became clear بالرَّغمin spite منكَof you وراقاand became pleasant
And I endured the life you had clouded,
And I was patient with life that you troubled
Until, despite you, it grew clear and pleasant,
Until it cleared, despite you, and was docile.

لاnot يَستَجيبَit respond لِغَيرِهِto anyone but him ميشاقاa covenant (apparent misspelling)
Through a youth, as though glory had granted him
With a young man as if glory had given him
A covenant that it would answer none but him.
That he does not respond to other than him valiantly.

Do not marvel at one who sees you and some of what
Do not be surprised by one who sees you, and some of what
You do, and so, because of you, takes al-Sham for Iraq.
Comes to you, so he thought the Levant Iraq.
