أتَتنيthey came to me ولمand did not يسبقprecede باتيانِهاof their coming وَعدُa promise
Night-visitors of grief, unknown to my heart,
The nights whose coming brought me no promise
came to me, no promise heralding their arrival.
Came to me though no tryst with them I'd made.
تقسَّمwas divided جورُthe cruelty البينِof separation قسمينِtwo parts فيin الهوىlove
فنارٌso a fire لهاfor it قلبٌa heart ودمعٌand tears لهfor them خدُّa cheek
In love, the cruelty of separation split into two:
My heart was split in two by separation's wrong -
so fire has a heart, and tears have a cheek.
For it, fire; for my cheek, tears that strayed.
ألاbehold إنهاindeed it is كاسُthe cup الهوىof love وهيand it is مُرَّةٌbitter
ولكنَّbut قلبيmy heart شاهدٌa witness أنهاthat it is الشَّهدُhoney
Behold, it is the cup of love, and it is bitter,
Love's wine is bitter, yet my heart will say
but my heart bears witness that it is honey.
That to the drinker it is sweet as honeyed julep.
تقولُshe says وقدwhile already أضمَرتُI have harbored غدراًtreachery بودِّهاtoward her affection
إذاif صحَّis sincere منكfrom you الودُّaffection صحَّis sincere لكfor you الودُّaffection
She says, though I have harbored treachery against her love:
She says, though she's resolved to break faith with my love,
If your affection is sincere, affection for you is sincere.
"If you keep faith, I'll keep faith with you."
فماso not نرجسُthe narcissus الألحاظِof glances أولىmore deserving بمهجَتيof my lifeblood
ولاnor الوجناتُthe cheeks اللاتيwhich زَهرتُهاtheir blossom الوَردُthe rose
For the narcissus of glances has no greater claim on my lifeblood,
The narcissi of her glances claim my love
nor the cheeks whose blossom is the rose.
No less than roses blushing into bloom.
ولكنَّهbut it is حكمُthe decree الهوىof love أنتَyou صاحبيmy companion
علىon أنَّهthat it ماwhatever شاءwills ليسthere is no لهfor it رَدُّrefusal
But it is love's decree: you are my companion,
For love has ruled, "This one shall be your friend,"
though whatever it wills admits no refusal.
Though what it wants, none has the power to undo.
لهit has موردٌa watering-place ذوwith مصدرينtwo exits وسلوةٌand solace
توافيكَcomes to you بعدafter اليأسِdespair منهاof it أوor اللحدُthe grave
It has a watering-place with two exits: solace
It has a cistern with two springs, and floods
that reaches you after you despair of it—or the grave.
Of tears that outpour, ebb and flow.
وجدتُI found فؤاديmy heart حيثwhere لاno حدَّlimit فيin الهوىlove
كماas ابنِson of عليٍّʿAli فيin العُلىglory حيثُwhere لاno حدُّlimit
I found my heart where love knows no limit,
I've found my heart ranging boundless as the love
as Ibn ʿAli is in glory, where there is no limit.
Of Ali's son, that has no bound set to.
وإنand if تُنظمِare strung الأوصافُthe qualities منfrom جوهرthe gems العلىof glory
رأيتyou would see فتىًa youth فيin كلevery صنفٍkind لهhe has عِقدُa necklace
And if qualities are strung from the gems of glory,
If you string prose pearls in necklace style,
you would see a youth with a necklace of every kind.
You'll find this prince is like no other prince.
جَنانٌa heart إذاwhen الهنديةُthe Indian swords البيضthe white ones حُكِّمتare made arbiters
نهتهُforbade it العُلىglory عنfrom أنthat تَحلَّshe dwell بهin it هِندُHind
A heart: when the white Indian blades are made arbiters,
A garden, when the white jasmine is judge,
glory forbids it to let Hind dwell within.
Bars the red rose: "Don't enter in!"
فتىa youth الأعجميal-Aʿjami الأعجميspeechless حسامُهhis sword
وإنand though نطقتspoke آثارُهits traces عندماwhen يَبدوit appears
A youth, al-Aʿjami, whose sword is speechless,
The youth of Persia is sublime of soul,
though its traces speak whenever it appears.
Though, when he speaks, his broken Arabic shows.
فتىًa youth جودُهhis generosity منfrom قبلbefore رؤيةseeing شخصهhis person
كذاthus الجودُgenerosity لاno تسويفَdelay فيهin it ولاand no وعدُpromise
A youth whose generosity precedes the sight of him;
A prince whose generosity, before you see his face,
such is generosity: no delay in it, and no promise.
Is fixed, no putting off, no promise left delayed.
وهنَّand they القَوافيthe rhymes أنthat أطيلَتwere lengthened وقُصِّرتand were shortened
فمعروفُهfor his bounty فيin فِعلهاtheir making وهوand it is المجدُglory
And these are the rhymes, lengthened and shortened:
When verses' rhymes, long and short, are made to match,
for his bounty is at work in their making, and that is glory.
What's known of him shows honor in both deed and word.
