عَرَّضَ لي بالوِصالِ في النَّوم

عَرَّضَ لي بالوِصالِ في النَّوم

وزارَني خُفيةً من القَومِ

He hinted to me at union in sleep,

He offered me a union in a dream

and visited me unbeknownst to the people.

And visited me secretly from the people

حتَّى إذا ما الصَّباحُ عاد لَنا

عُدتُ عَليه بعادَةِ اللَّومِ

عُدتُ عَليه بعادَةِ اللَّومِ

Until, when morning returned to us,

I resumed my customary reproaches against him.

I returned to blaming him

فانظُر إلى لَيلَتي وما صَنَعَت

أما تَرى فَضلَها عَلى يَومي

So look at my night and what it wrought:

do you not see how it surpasses my day?

Do you not see its merit over my day
