سَقياًa blessing of rain لمَوقِفِناfor the place where we stood عشيَّةَone evening بالحِمىin the protected grounds
نَشكوwe complain of الغَرامَlove ولَفظُناand our speech الألحاظُthe glances
May rain bless the place where we stood one evening in the sanctuary,
May rain bless the place where we stood one evening in the protected grounds.
The trysting place on the sultry eve
Lamenting love, while our glances were our speech.
We complain of love, and our speech is glances.
where we complain of love while whispering gazes,
وعَواذِليand my reproachers لمَّاwhen تَشابَهَbecame unclear أمرُناour affair
هَجَعُواthey slumbered أسَىًin sorrow لكنًّهمbut they أيقاظُawake
And when my reproachers could no longer make sense of our affair,
And my reproachers, when our affair grew obscure,
and my companions when our plight is one,
They slumbered from sorrow, though they were awake.
slumbered in sorrow, yet they were awake.
retire to sleep though wakeful.
فكأنَّناso, as though we المَعنَىthe meaning المُرادُintended لَطافَةًin subtlety
وكأنَّهمand as though they فيin صَمتِناour silence الأَلفاظُthe words
It was as though, in our subtlety, we were the intended meaning,
So, in subtlety, we were like the intended meaning,
As though we are pure spirit in meaning,
And they, amid our silence, were the words.
and they, in our silence, were like the words.
and they, in our silence, but empty words.
