Has his tear duct grown accustomed to the flood of tears,

or does grief deter him from noble patience?

    ففرَّقت عينُهُ ما كانَ يَجمعُهُ

    He had been a repository of secrets, concealing them;

then his eye scattered what he used to gather.

And whenever he sought to hold back tears, he was opposed

in restraining them by a surge of longing that thwarted him.

As though he possessed many hearts in love,

and every day a heart of his bids him farewell.

There is no cord of union you see unbroken through time

but separation will, without doubt, sever it.

Nor do we see the light of a sun that has risen among humankind

but its rising came from a sun.

Hashim has the lead in generosity’s race, just as

al-Nasih ibn Ali has its swiftest pace.
