ربَّmany a هَمٍّworry إذاwhen تفكرتI reflected فيماon what
ربَّ هَمٍّ إذا تفكرت فيما
كانcame to be منهfrom it بدَّلتُهI exchanged it بالسُّرورِfor joy
كان منه بدَّلتُه بالسُّرورِ
Many a worry, when I reflected on what
Whenever I think of what has passed,
came of it, I exchanged for joy.
I replace it with joy.
نسبةٌa lineage تكرهhates الإناثthe females فماso not تَسfirst part of 'you hear'
نسبةٌ تكره الإناث فما تَس
مَعُfinal part of 'you hear' فيهاin it ذكراًa mention لغيرِof other than الذُّكورِthe males
مَعُ فيها ذكراً لغيرِ الذُّكورِ
A lineage that hates females, so you do not hear
A lineage that hates females, not naming
in it mention of anyone other than males.
Any but males.
ليتَif only أرماحَكمyour spears أباO father of الجيشthe army كانتwere
ليتَ أرماحَكم أبا الجيش كانت
كالمَناياlike death قنوعةًcontent باليَسيرِwith little
كالمَنايا قنوعةً باليَسيرِ
If only your spears, Abū al-Jaysh, were
If only your spears, oh commander of the army,
like death, content with little.
Were like death, content with taking little.
