    Your beauty has captured the heart of your lovesick lover.

    So do not make your lover languish through your coyness.

    فَعالِجهُ وإلاّ فهو هالك

    Sorrowful, he is ill from your eyelids;

    so heal him, or else he will perish.

    The tormented, lovesick one seeks union with you,

    even if death lies in union with you.

    You unjustly forbid union to the one who loves you,

    and begrudge it even in your phantom's presence.

    أَيَخْطر ذكرها يوماً ببالك

    The yearning lover never forgets to remember you;

    does the thought of her ever cross your mind?

    His avenues have indeed narrowed about him,

    and the paths to his destination have been barred.

    فَلِمْ لا مِلتَ يوماً عن ملالك

    I have grown weary, but you have not tired of estrangement;

    then why have you not once turned from your weariness?

    O gazelle of the sand dune, white gazelle that you are,

    how many lions have been caught in your snares!

    If your hair's parting resembles dawn,

    my wretched fortune resembles the blackness of your beauty mark.

    I say to a reproacher who blames me for loving you:

    May God deafen my hearing to your words!

    Between passion and solace lies a gulf,

    like that between union with you and parting from you.

    فهَلاَّ كانَ وَصلُك من حلالك

    You permit the shedding of the captive's inviolable blood;

    why not count union with you among what you allow?

    أما تجب الزَّكاة على جمالك

    Grant us union as the alms due on beauty;

    is the alms-tax not due on your beauty?

    In loving you we are, as you see us,

    thirsty—you offer us no hope in your thoughts.

    and love of you casts us into ruin.

    Souls desire nothing but a meeting,

    and I have fed my soul on your bounty.

    فواظمأ الفؤاد إلى زلالك

    You have barred me from drinking at those lips;

    oh, how my heart thirsts for your limpid water!

    O abode of al-Malikiyya, after Layla,

    it would be folly if I yearned for any union but yours.

    May steady morning rains water you to fullness,

    trailing their skirts across your sands.

    and my greatest torment comes from your gazelle.

    And O heart that melts with longing for you,

    I see this love leading to your ruin.

    Passion burdens you with a heavy load,

    and no hearts have borne what you have borne.

    Hark, seek my heart at Dhat al-Dal,

    for I recall that it came to be there.

    Do not lead us down the paths of reproaching women,

    for I will not follow your path.

    You did guide—rather, misguide—me along it,

    so I could not tell your guidance from your misguidance.

    I grieve while you are free of my passion,

    and look: my state—may I be bereaved of you!—is unlike yours.

    من العجز اتَّكلْت على احتيالك

    Do not try any trick against my patience;

    out of helplessness you have relied on your cunning.

    when would he heed your talk or your words?

    He adorns the dawn of his hair's parting

    with a jet-black darkness blacker than the night.

    is your remarkable ready wit and your improvisation.

    the fruits of excellence are gathered from your perfection.

    though we have never found your equal.

    Enough that you are the noblest of all upon the earth;

    the earth itself is honored by your sandals.

    How many a sword God has, gleaming

    in its metal; Providence attends your polishing.

    telling your petitioners how auspicious your omen is.

    for a downpour is but one kind of your moisture.

    we drink from your right hand or your left.
