You were miserly, yet my gaze is not miserly toward you.
You were stingy, though my eyes were not miserly toward you,
And many a gift its giver never sees.
And many a drink I gave which no cupbearer could see.

You forbade a thirsty soul to be quenched by your saliva,
You forbade a thirsty man to sate himself on your radiance.
so there is no way to the water of al-Udhayb.
There is no path to the water of al-Udhayb.

The most unjust of those who wrong the lovesick in love
Darker than one who wrongs the rain-clouds in passion
is a wealthy debtor who withholds love's debt, slow to repay.
Is a twisting, religion-bending, lovesick fool.

How often you made promises, but the hopes were dashed!
Yet even what beauties give in plenty is little.
Many are the singing girls, but few who are sincere.

Return a glance to my eyes, O Mayy,
Restore to my eyes, O light of my eyes, a glance
that a lover of yours may cool his burning thirst with it.
Through which the anguish of your lover may be relieved.

My being was severed from me by a phantom of you
and me lie separation's rugged hills and plains.
Which left me grieving for the campsite and the plains.

In my heart is a passion for that apparition I saw,
a love that draws longing wherever it inclines.
A madness that desire cannot turn aside.

My night is like my fortune in loving you—
it dragged on—and lovers' nights are long.
The night of lovers has ever been long.

The gleam of lightning kept me awake in it,
I am troubled in it by the flash of lightning
as though a polished blade, keen on both edges, were drawn.
Like the polished Indian sword when drawn from its sheath.

blades cutting darkness's black man to pieces.
To rend the darkness' robe with piercing lights.

The smile of lightning reminds me of your smile,
so it gives tears both a flow and a channel.
Making the tears flow down in streams.

Does the blood shed by his eyelids, more woeful than kohl,
by a dark-lipped, soft-voiced, kohl-eyed one with his glance?
Not torment my friend Khalil?

A gazelle with eyes like a preserve pelted me with glances

Despite myself, I left those I loved,
by the caravan's departure, as it urged the mounts onward.
And now I moan and lament their loss.

Setting like my companions in the west.

by stars that set among those who departed.
A line of camels grumbling with thirst.

Yet seeking redress avails nothing, and there is no fair-minded one
