When will an aching heart find healing,
When will a sore liver find relief,
and a lovesick one satisfy his longings,
And a lovelorn heart get what it longs to have,

and one who hopes attain his desire,
When will a hopeful get his wish,
with anguish blazing in his entrails?
While his entrails burn with a blazing fire?

فأنجدَand ascended فيinto قلبيmy heart المتْهِمُthe Tihama-bound one
Indeed, the caravan struck camp on the day of the companions' departure,
The band turned back on the fateful day,
and the Tihama-bound one ascended into my heart.
And lit a blaze in my guilty heart,
وروَّعَنيand startled me ضيفُa guest طيفٍof a dream-phantom سرىpassed by night

And a visiting phantom, passing by night, startled me,
A phantom guest startled me at night,
by which an aching heart is struck with fear.
Stirring up sorrow in my sore liver.

My two friends, is there a halt among the dwellings
My friend, is there a stopping place in the abode,
where streaming tears pour down?
Where my streaming tears may find rest?

For we stood there at midmorning,
For we stopped there at the break of dawn,
and everyone in the caravan was deeply lovesick.
While all in the band were lovelorn.

And tears from the eyes divulged my secret;
My eyes poured out the secret of my tears,
the secret of passionate longing cannot be concealed.
A secret the youth cannot conceal.

So I leave off weeping for fear of tale-bearers,
So I heed not the critics’ fear,
and a person may abandon what is necessary.
A man may leave even what is right.

If ever we forget the days at al-Ghuwayr,
If we forget the trysts of the lovely doe,
the traces remind us of its former days.
Her tattoo on the hill reminds us.

Oh, how lovely was our day at al-Aqiq!
Happy was the day we spent at al-‘Aqiq,
Its most blameworthy day passed and came to an end.
Its painful day has passed and gone,
بحيثwhere تلوحgleam شموسthe suns of الطلاwine

There the suns of wine gleamed,
When the brilliant sun began to shine,
and night's hue was coal-black, pitch-black,
And the darkness of our night retreated.

The days of youth at al-Nuway’ have vanished,
and our night's black steed withdrew.
Patience cannot make them return.
تصرَّمَwas cut short عهدُthe days of النَّقاal-Naqa (the sandhill) بالنوىby separation
فماso why للتصبُّرwith patient endurance لاnot يُصرمُis cut short
The days at al-Naqa were cut short by separation;
Do you deny you killed the roe of Sarim,
so why is patient endurance not cut short?
While your mole attests to this for me?
أتنكرdo you deny قتليkilling me غزالَO gazelle of الصَّريمِthe thicket
ويشهدُand testifies ليfor me خدُّكyour cheek العندمvermilion-red
Do you deny killing me, O gazelle of the thicket,
Why did you deliberately roil my blood,
while your vermilion cheek testifies for me?
And make lawful in love what is sin?
ففيمَso why أرقتَdid you spill دميmy blood عامداًdeliberately
وحلَّلتَand made lawful فيin الحبّlove ماwhat يحرمis forbidden
Why, then, did you deliberately spill my blood
You judged me for the sin of loving,
and make lawful in love what is forbidden?
And I submit to your judgment, resigned.
حَكَمْتَyou passed judgment عليَّupon me بأمرby the decree of الغرامpassion
وإنِّيand indeed I لحكمكto your judgment مستسلمُam submissive
You passed judgment upon me by love's decree,
I said to those who blamed me for loving you:
and I submit to your judgment.
“You know not that losing you left me blind.”
وقلتُand I said لمنto whoever لامَنيblamed me فيfor هواكloving you
جَهِلْتَyou do not know ثكلتكmay your mother lose you ماwhat أعلمُI know
And I told whoever reproached me for loving you:
A lightning lit up the darkness for me,
You do not know—may your mother lose you!—what I know.
Like a sword drawn suddenly from its sheath.
وأرَّقَنيand kept me awake فيin الدُّجىthe darkness بارقٌa lightning flash
كماas though استُلَّwas drawn منfrom غمدهits sheath مخذمa keen sword
And a lightning flash kept me awake in the darkness,
And craving for the roes of the sanctuary,
as though a keen sword were drawn from its sheath.
Made me lovesick, as passion makes one sick.
وشوَّقنيand made me yearn لِظِباءِfor the gazelles of الحمىthe protected pastures
فأَسْقَمَنيso it sickened me والهوىand love يُسْقِمُcauses sickness
And it made me yearn for the gazelles of the protected pastures,
I wonder how the tender roes,
then sickened me—and love brings sickness.
Can be hunted by their languid eyes.
عَجِبْتُI marveled وكيفَand how وهُنَّthough they are الظّباءgazelles
يُصادُis hunted بأَجفانهاby their eyelids الضَّيغمُthe lion
I marveled: how, though they are gazelles,
Safe from the blades of the sharp swords,
is the lion hunted by their eyelids?
Yet their glances give no respite.
ويَسلمُand escapes منfrom مرهفاتthe sharpened blades of السُّيوفswords
ومنand from لحظهنَّtheir glances فلاyet not يَسْلَمُhe escapes
And he escapes the keen blades of swords,
The likes of them I fear to confront,
yet he does not escape their glances.
One like me confronts but is not confronted.
ومنand from مثلهنَّones like them أخافI fear الصّدامa clash
ويَصدِمُand strikes مثليone like me ولاbut not يُصدمis struck
And I fear a clash with their like,
I craved you, O doe of the ruins,
though one like me strikes and is not struck.
This passion comes totally from you.
هَوَيتكُمI have loved you ياO أُهيلdear folk of الحطيمal-Hatim
وهذاand this الهوىlove كلُّهall of it منكمُis from you
I have loved you, O dear folk of al-Hatim,
You decided to abandon your lover,
and all this love comes from you.
Yet the days of tryst are destined.
قَضَيْتُمyou sentenced علىupon صبِّكمyour lovesick admirer بالبعادto separation
وإنَّand indeed قضاءَthe decree of النَّوىseparation مُبْرَمُirrevocable
You sentenced your lovesick admirer to separation,
After you no drink quenched my thirst,
and the decree of separation is irrevocable.
Nor food delighted my taste.
فلمso not يَصفُwas clear ليto me بعدكمafter your departure مشربٌa drink
ولاnor لذَّtasted pleasant ليto me بعدكمafter your departure مطعمُany food
So no drink has been clear to me since your departure,
But I am patient with adversity,
nor has any food pleased my palate since your departure.
A young man’s patience is most sublime.

وصَبرُand the patience of الفتىa young man للفتىfor a young man أسلمُis safer
And I endure the hardest calamities,
My honor is pure and zeal is my defense,
and a young man's patience is safer for him.
My might does not contradict my resolve.
وعِرضِيand my honor نقيٌّis pure وأنفيand my nose (pride) حميٌّis inviolable
وبأسيand my might كعزميَlike my resolve لاnot يُثلمis blunted
And my honor is pure, and my nose unbowed,
Were it not for the noble Iraqi jurist,
and my might, like my resolve, cannot be blunted.
The generous and kind benefactor.

And were it not for the noble deeds of Iraq's mufti—
Time would not have apologized for its sin,
and none but he is the generous giver, the benefactor—
Nor the days sought forgiveness for their crime.

ولاnor استغفرsought forgiveness الزَّمَنُTime المجرمthe guilty

Time would not have apologized for its sin,
Praiseworthy virtues of Mahmud abound,
nor would guilty Time have sought forgiveness.
High above the peaks of glory lies his name.

Mahmud's virtues are praiseworthy,
Gentle, kind, of noble disposition,
and are inscribed upon the brows of eminence.
This is the most generous and virtuous man.

فهذاso this هوis he الأَكرمthe most generous الأَشيمُof noble traits
Gentle in manner, noble in disposition,
His character tells of his morals,
he is the most generous, the man of noble traits.
His radiant smile speaks of his cheer.

His character tells of his outward form,
He who hopes for favors from his palm,
and his smiling mouth heralds his bounty.
Will not be deprived of his hands’ generosity.

So whoever hopes for favor from his palm
His hands reach every captive neck,
and for his hands' bounty will not be deprived.
And from them we received great boons.

His hands have placed a favor upon every neck,
I swear by your might, sincerely,
and from them blessings have been poured forth for us.
And swear not by other than your might.

By your might I swear, without perjury,
You are peerless in this age,
and I swear by no might but yours.
Your path is the soundest path.

You are indeed the peerless one in this age,
You are the pride, from you comes pride,
and your path is the straightest path.

And you are glory, and glory comes from you;
You built with your soul the house of glory,
let Adam take pride in one like you.
Never to crumble till the end of time.

You yourself built the house of glory,
You understood the symbols of problems,
never to be demolished for all eternity.
While others cannot understand them.

You understood the symbols in difficult questions,
You uncovered the obscurities of complexities,
and who but you is there who understands?
Through your discoveries, the ambiguous became clear.

You laid bare the obscurities of their complexity,
You possess the eloquent proofs,
and through your elucidation the obscure became clear.
The pious Muslim acknowledges them.

And indeed, yours are the conclusive arguments
Your answers, my master, leave me silent,
to which the believing Muslim gives assent.
And your advice, my master, is conclusive.

ونُصْحُكَand your counsel ياO سيِّديmy master مُفْحِمُunanswerable
Your answer, my master, silences,
What is sweet in taste wanes in your displeasure,
and your counsel, my master, is unanswerable.
And what is bitter in your gifts turns sweet.

What tastes sweet turns bitter at your displeasure,
When you write, the mind is the sword,
and through your gifts colocynth grows sweet.
In your fingers lies might and firmness.

Whenever you write, the reed pen
Your prose outshines the necklace of pearls,
in your fingers is a sword, a keen-edged blade.
So the meanings are threaded into gems.

And your prose puts a necklace of pearls to shame,
Too little I gained of what you deserve,
for with your fingers the pearls of meaning are strung.
While your status is far greater and higher.

What you have attained is little compared with your due,
I widely spread your excellent qualities,
and your worth is greater—indeed, greater still.
My religion and wealth lie in your praise.

For in your company I seek refuge,
and in your praise are faith and the dirham.
And in your covenant, I find strength.

In you I subdue the enemies' pride.

and through you I rub the enemies' noses in dust.
For you are our greatest delight.

The envious one acknowledges your merit despite himself,
Grant me your approval, for in it lies wealth,
and the mute speaks in your praise.
Your approval is the profitable gain.

Reward me with your approval: there lies wealth,
for your approval is the prize.
