إذاwhen نَبَتِgrow inhospitable الدِّيارُthe lands بحرِّto a noble man of قومٍa people

When lands grow inhospitable to a people's noble man,
If the homes flourish in the sea of a people
there is no blame upon the one who departs.
Then there is no blame on the one who parts
ومنذُand since وجَدتُI felt منof همِّيmy sorrow رسيساًa lingering trace
إلىto روحيmy soul وأعوزنيand eluded me ارتياحيmy ease
And ever since I felt a lingering trace of my sorrow
Since I found my worries to be plentiful
reach my soul, and my peace eluded me,
My soul is in need and comfort evades me
وماand not صَعَّرْتُI turned aside للأيامtoward the days خدِّيmy cheek

ولمand not أخفِضْI lowered لنائبةٍbefore a calamity جناحيmy wing
I have never turned my cheek away from the days,
I did not bow my forehead to the days
nor lowered my wing before a calamity.
Nor did I lower my wings to misfortune

And the noose tightened around me, so I blamed myself,
Distress tightened around me so I steeled myself
though no reproacher laid blame upon me.
Even if no one reproaches me, I blame myself

And I have come to live in a contentious age,
For I have come upon difficult times
that shows me earnestness through the gaps in jest.
That show me seriousness amidst jest

I abandoned my residence and embarked on a venture
I rejected staying and embarked on a perplexing matter
likely to bring about my well-being.
That may hold my rectification

A ship sails with us through the deep sea,
Our ship sails into the sea's abyss
like a bird beating its wing.
Like a bird flapping its wings

And we remained aboard until we arrived
We sailed on her until we arrived
one morning in Kuwait of the House of al-Sabah,
One morning in Kuwait of the Al-Sabah

among a people whose neighbors are the best protected of all,
With people who honor a neighbor
and whose palms are most generous with gifts.
And whose bellies are satiated when full

Proud men, among whom oppression never roams,
Stubborn, no injustice circulates among them
nor is any neighbor of theirs open to violation.
Nor do they have a neighbor with impunity

Showers of noble deeds and lions of war,
Helping hands and courageous lions
and worthy peers of courage and combat.
Worthy of valor and struggle

I lodged with them in abundance and spacious ease,
I descended among them to spaciousness and breadth
and in fellowship, joy, and gladness of heart.
With intimacy, delight, and relief

For they are a people among whom Abdullah rose to preeminence,
A people whom Abdallah leads
through fierce valor and generosity.
With utmost strength and leniency

When they settle in a land—by your father's life—
When they descend upon a land for battle
they defend it with spearheads and lances.
They protect it with tongues and spears

And how often they began with a noble deed and followed it with another,
How much they begin with honor and excel
and how often they slaughtered foes like sacrificial beasts.
And how much they slaughter the enemy like sacrifices

They made their enemies drink crimson death
They quenched their enemies' thirst with the redness of death
with brown spears of al-Khatt and white, broad-bladed swords.
With the red of the sword and the white blade

And their noble deeds have never ceased to call
Their virtues do not cease to call
amid hopes: 'Come to success!'
To hopes, awaken, for success

In their hands is the bridle-bit of one endowed with might,
In their hands is a cumbersome powerfulness
which reins the unruly back from running wild.
Which drives back the reckless from transgression

They themselves laid out the milk-draughts of lofty honors,
They placed the utensils of excellence
as the camel calf suckled from milch camels.
As the foal suckles from the teat

If ever I visited them, the promise was kept for me
When I visit them one day if fate grants me
by my guarantor of the visit's success.
Including me in the visit’s success

Through them I unleashed the tongues of rhymes,
Through them I unleash the tongues of poetry
with the eloquent words those rhymes dictate.
With what it dictates of eloquent speech

Indeed, love for them has been mingled with my soul,
Their love has mixed into my soul
as wine is mingled with pure water.
Like the mixing of wind with hot air

As though praising them were wine to me,
It is as if their praise to me is a potion
with which I took my evening and morning draughts.
Through which my early rising and recovery occurred

I grew drunk on them, though I had not mingled with wine,
I am saturated with them and did not drink wine
nor stretched my palm toward a cup of wine.
Nor did I extend my bed for rest

Sweeter than wine to drinking companions,
Sweeter than drink for the repentant
and here I am, not sober in my love for them.

And if I made a request of my time,
And time granted me my request
and time granted me what I requested,
I would never part from them

إذاif وُفِّقْتُI am granted success عنهمfrom them منany براحِdeparture
I would never part from them for a day, nor would I,
If I am enabled separation from them
if granted success, ever depart from them.
That is denied for me by allotted fate

But an ordained fate denies me that,
And we are in the grip of fate’s allotment
and we are in the grasp of ordained fate.
