علىat دارٍa dwelling لناof ours أمستthat became خلاءاdeserted
We stopped with the caravan at Salʿ one day,
At a dwelling of ours that had become deserted.

يجاذبناit tugs at us علىat الطللthe ruins البكاءاweeping
We repeated our sighs and cast our eyes about,
While weeping tugged at us beside the ruins.
وقفناwe stopped والنياقand the she-camels لهاhad حنينyearning
كأنas though النوقthe camels أعظمناthe most afflicted of us بلاءاin suffering
We stopped, and the she-camels were yearning,
As though the camels suffered more than we did.

فمنthen for إلْفٍa companion لناof ours عناfrom us تناءىwho went far away
From longing, if it was not for that place—or else
For a companion of ours who had gone far away.

We stopped at an old encampment,
And renewed our mourning by stopping there.

فقدfor indeed هاجhas stirred الهوىlonging فيamong الركبthe caravan داءاan illness
I said to my companion, “Is there a cure?
For longing has stirred an illness in the caravan.”
ودارand a dwelling طالماso often أوقفتI stopped فيهاin it
فغادرتand I left الظِّماءthe thirsty بهاthere رواءاquenched
And a dwelling where I had so often stopped,
Leaving the thirsty there fully quenched.
لهاit has حقa claim علىupon المشتاقthe one who yearns مناamong us
فأسرعso hurry ياO هذيمHudhaym لهاto it الأداءاthe payment
It has a claim upon those of us who yearn;
So hurry, Hudhaym, and pay it what is due.
أرقshed ياO سعدSaʿd دمعكyour tears إنَّfor indeed دمعيmy tears
دمٌare blood إنْif كانَthey are منكfrom you الدمعthe tears ماءاwater
Shed your tears, Saʿd, for my tears
Are blood, if yours are water.
وماand why لكdo you لاnot تريقshed لهاfor her دموعاًtears
وإنِّيwhile I قدindeed أرقتhave shed لهاfor her دماءاblood
Why do you not shed tears for her,
When I have shed blood for her?

بأهليهاfor their people وتحيينيand revive me رجاءاwith hope
The ruins nearly kill me with despair
For their people, then revive me with hope.
هوىًa love ماnot سرَّهاpleased her إذwhen سرّit pleased يوماًone day
وكمand how often سرّhas pleased الهوىlove منfrom حيثwhere ساءاit caused pain
A love that did not please her, though it once brought joy—
And how often love brings joy where it causes pain.
كأنas though العيسthe camels تشجيهاsadden them المغانيthe old dwellings
فتشجيناand they sadden us حنيناًwith yearning أوor رغاءاbellowing
It is as though the old dwellings sadden the camels,
And their yearning or bellowing saddens us.
وقدand indeed عاجتturned aside مطاياناour mounts سراعاًswiftly
فماand not رحّلتهاI set them on their way إلاَّexcept بِطاءاslowly
Our mounts, swift as they were, turned aside,
And I set them on their way only slowly.
