We paused awhile at the deserted dwelling of the Mālikiyya,

and what had befallen those ruins stirred us deeply there.

    It rouses a heart’s sorrow and a beholder’s tears—

burning anguish leaves one solitary, while streaming tears come paired.

Nor did this passion suffice, until it shook me to the core,

while we were at Mount Salʿ—alas, my soul, for Salʿ!

A love at Jamʿ, O Hudhaym, and a yearning—

while the gathering-place of terrors still remains at Jamʿ.

And a longing that has ravaged the heart, beyond all endurance,

though it knows that patience is most conducive to good.

It recalls for me the days when Ẓamyā granted me

a little favor, then, after yielding, turned to denial.

Nor have I forgotten when she visited by night, as love’s informers

had taken up listening posts there.

Its darkness resembled her tresses; then there appeared

a face like the full moon amid the dark mass of her hair.

She repeats within my hearing her words of tender reproach,

like a cooing grey dove, enchanting with its measured song.

Her meanings are subtle as the slenderness of her waist,

clothed in delicate words that my tears enfold.

And indeed, the nectar of her lips, which once she gave me to drink

while the informers were unaware, on the pass’s right-hand side—

the lingering trace of its taste is still within my mouth,

and the delight of those conversations still within my ears.

Yet all of that was before we witnessed departure,

before estrangement struck us with a sundering blow.
