وتَجوبُ البيد حِلاًّ وارتحالا
These she-camels sink down in exhaustion,
For these she-camels their necks hang low in languor
And roam the deserts, halting and journeying.
And they roam the wide desert in their journeying's to and fro

والهوى يُنْقِبُ أهليه نكالا
They grew lean until their bones were worn down,
They have toiled until the strongest among them grew gaunt
And love wears down its devotees as punishment.
And yearning has extracted its due from its own kin unkindly.

Whenever they glimpse radiance from lightning,
Whensoever the lightning of the clouds illumined the dark
Their anguish pours forth freely flowing tears.
It flung aside its garment and wept copious tears in woe

Now they cleave their deserts on night journeys,
They wander the horizons at the break of dawn
And, plunging through mirages, resemble an ostrich chick.
And struggle against the flood waters with utmost strain.

So be gentle with them, O singing camel-driver;
So, O guide, show mercy unto it -
For longing has bequeathed them madness.
Sorrow has made its meagre body frail.

I never forget a halt at Rāma
Of which separation left nothing but a phantom.
Where nothing was left save traces and shadows pale

And a tear betrayed every lovesick lover,
Every mortal being wept in bereavement -
So his tear spared the tale-bearer any words.
Their weeping stopped the flow of tears without fail.

Pierced by graceful maidens' eyes like arrowheads.
Wounded by the piercing glances of the antelope's eyes!

O oryx of the valley bend, to him you are
O epitome of anguish! You have made him frail,
Stealers, through beauty, of his anguished heart.
Wresting the woeful heart of its beauty and hale.

O my dear friends, a time has grown distant
O my companions, time called me -
That passed for me among you, in union and parting.
In you it passed, conjoining and dividing without fail.

And nights—how sweet their companionship!—
Nights whose intimacy I prized -
Have become a beauty mark on the cheek of days.
Became mere apparitions in days gone stale.

The tale-bearer carried you a report;
The guide has conveyed tidings to you -
What he said [could not] be considered plausible.
Though you'd scarce bear what was told, it will prevail.

يتمنَّى وأبي أمراً محالا
He wishes that I might forget my love, yet he
I wish for your company, but my want -
Wishes, by my father, for something impossible.
Is a wish for what will never transpire nor avail.

Do not blame me for my passion, my reproacher;
Blame me not, O critic, for my youth -
For love has always been a fetter on reason.
Passion reigns over reason without fail.

So leave me to my love - I am a youth
Whom longing has slain by stealth, far from you.
Whose fervor for you has murdered reason's hale.

Among the gazelles of the sands is one who, if he gazes,
Among the oryxes of the sands - an oryx that trills,
Draws a keen sword from his two eyelids and attacks.
Distils from its eyelids a tear-drop without fail.

أَدَلالاً كانَ منها أَمْ ملالا
The gazelle of the inner chamber—when she turned cold,
The oryx of Khadr when it grew emaciated -
Was it coyness on her part, or weariness?
Was it out of longing, or simply its body frail?

Did it repay its creditor though aggrieved -
Who complains of her delay even when she pays in full?
Complaining of it, even if the payment's without fail?

If she allowed me the fruit of her lips,
If she allowed me to kiss her rosy cheek -
She would surely cure the incurable disease with her saliva.
It would cure me of my lasting incurable ail.

O, may God preserve those dwelling in the protected grounds!
O folk, may God protect them from fever -
A lover's stumble among them will never be forgiven.
For the passion of the lovers is blameless without fail!

They have permitted wrongly the forbidden,
In their law they forbade something lawful.
And forbidden in their creed what is made lawful and hale.

So be patient, O heart: one day, perhaps,
So be patient O heart, perhaps one day -
The rainless flash may, after despair, become a rain-promising cloud.
The intimate may, after despair, become close and hale.

How often does time show me seriousness in jest -
So I show it strife with the sharp edges of my resolve.
Then I show it of the oryxes my purpose fixed and hale!

For his name provides hope even when hope is frail.

Or do you hope when oceans swell and prevail?

How often we have approached a watering-place of his bounty,
How often we attained his bounty from a source -
